WAIRARAPA EAST COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Council resumed at 2-30 p.m. yesterday, the same members being present as in the morning. The Chairman (Cr Mackay), and Cr Hawkins were appointed delogotoa to the conference, which is to be held at Wellington on tlie 7th July. The Council then proceeded to consider questions connected with Road Boards.
It was resolved that the dissolution of Road Boards, in the case of a new district being formed, shall bo limited to the ward or wards affected, 80 that the expense of an entirely, fall election may be avoided., \ That the Council shall have power, to transfer from one district to another any one or more properties at the request of owners, and with the consent of the Boards interested. At present -it is necessary to obtain the consent of tw» thirds of the ratepayers in each district before this can be done,
That the fcimo for repayment of loans under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act bo extended from fifteen to, say, fifty years. By this means the rate of repayment would be lessened from nine per cent to about five per cent per annum,
That the Government provide m,ea.n.s to empower local bodies Jo, tftke grave reserves on Crown, native, or private land,
That Clerks of Road Boards be appointed Clerks of Licensing Committees.
That the Road Boards be the authority to levy rates within the Counties, both for County and Road Board purposes; the rates for the County to be struck upon the issue of a precept by the Council requesting the Board todo so. That provision bo made to reduce the cost of advertising. That in the event of the Roads and Bridges Construction Act being repealed, Boards shall have power to, borrow money for special works, security, being given upon special rateß levied over defined areas, a long time being allowed for repayment, That the rating for. ordinary purposes be extended to one penny in the pound. . WORKS COMMITTEE, ; The Council then'resolved itself into a
Works Committee, when the following., resolutions wero passed:— " That the Engineer be instructed to call for tenders for the Tinui bridge j tenders to close on the 30th inst,, at noon; tho Clerk to call a meeting for 5 p.m. that day.; ■ M That Mr Jagerhorn's resignation of h" appointment as poundkeeper atMauriceville be accepted, and that Mr Aulin be informed that as soon as convenient yards have been erected by him, he will > be appointed. That the Minister for Puplic Works legalise the widening of the Bideford Pvoad at a spot to be indicated on the plan, for the purpose of allowingPiravel-> pit to be made. ' ■ •That the Engineer be authorised to i proceed with the work on the Taueru | Bideford Road, recommended by him in ; his report of the 9th June, with the approval of Or Hawkins, and within the, limits of the amount authorised. That Anderson's contract on the Eketahuna road, be suspended till Spring, in accordance with tho recommendation of the Engineer.
