Tiie Masterton Horticultural Society held its annual meeting last night, and the report and balance-sheet presented, proved that it has continued to gather strength during the eight years of its existonce, and that it lias every prospect of remaining- among the useful

institutions of the district, The Society has no debts, and a small balance at its banker, which would have been much larger if tfte mistake of adding poultry classes had not been niade last year. Societies of this description are not money-making eoncerris, and if they do have a balance at the end of the year, it can only be looked upon as being so much' to the 1 good of the prize list for the next year, The roll of members has continued to grow, and the prizes that are now offered are more substantial than during the earlier part of its existence. The members, we think,; acted wisely in altering the dates for holding the shows, which will in future come off a fortnight later in the season than last year. By this means they will secure far better et;tries,-and as a consequence, a better attendance. A well deserved compliment was paid to Mr W, EvEKETT, who has occupied the Presidential chair for the past six years, and who now retires. .MiEverett performed his duties to the satisfaction of everybody, and the resolution thanking him for his services is not merely a record of a compliment, but a genuine expression of the feeling ol the meeting.
