MR CASELBERG'S NEW RESIDENCE.

Messrs Williams and Barker have just .completed a contract fqr the erection of a new residence fpr Mr M. Oaselberg, apd the balding not only reflects credit on the architect (Mr Fannin) and the builders, b(jt materially imprpyeg that part of the town which ig generally k|)pwn as Dixon's.estate,. The building 19 of two storeys, and contains fourteen room's in all, On the ground floor, which is very conveniently arranged, is a lofty and well lighted drawing room, dining room, breakfast room, study, and the kitchen with the apartmentspertainingtoit. The hall is roomy and very prettily panelled. Large folding doors shut off the one part of the house from the other. Access to the front part may also be obtained,by a side door and passage. A broad staircase leads to the upper floor, which is chiefly taken up with bedrooms. • All of these are roomy, loftyj and well lighted, ventilation having also been specially provided for. The building is probably one of thestrongest ever putup intlie district, and is thoroughly proof against draughts, The walls consist of the outer weather boarding of totara, an intermediate sheathing and

tho lining, the latter of which is of red pine.. throughout. The . papering and decoration work has been 'done in subdued! colors, and there', .is a general harmony' throughout 1 the .house in this respect that is rarely equalled, The house is raised about three feet abovo the ground, but this will bo considerably reduced by filling in, so that tho ground will slope away froui it in all .directions. Drainage has been specially provided for, two wells faced with concrete having been sunk to receive drainage and refuso. The house occupies the centre of a square piece of ground containing five acres, the whole of which has been' laid out in plantation,- flower garden or orchard, A largo number of fruit and ornamental trees, and a considerable • extent of hedging, have already been planted, In front of the house is a raised oval containing about a third of an acre, which is being converted into a lawn, and between it and the house there is an oval flowerbed, also raised, and divided into three parts by walks. A carriage drive leads ruund both these ovah. A solid ornamental fence will be oreoted around the grounds, tho entrance to which Avill be from Worksop Road. Attached to the premises is a square paddock containing five acres, which lias been surrounded with wattle, pine, and other ornamental trees. There is not another house'in Masterton which is so conspicuous as this, and there is certainly none'more complete; The.view to be obtained from it is also most picturesque. The house has ben furnished throughout by Messrs Wliitt & Donaldson whose work in connection with this subject we have already noticed. • ' ■' 7-T- ' '3 -
