LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL; In the Council yesterday, the Colonia Secretary promised to consider the Jaw re Destitute persons, with a view to providing that wives possessed of property in their own right might be compelled to .contribute towards the support of their husbands ]]rhen necessary, The debate on the Address jn Reply wa§ resumed, and the motion carried, The Council then adjourned, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE, The House met at 2.30 p.m. Replying to questions, it was stated that if necessary a special Board would be appointed to' consider the grievances of railway employees in Southland; the members of such Board would receive no remuneration. That when the Government financial proposals wero before the House, it would be considered what power should be given the Gbverument, to relieve the depression of tho agricultural industry. That Pro-
feasor Kirk had boen instructed to report on the disease of fruit trees in Auckland.. That the Government had not received any report on the working of the Contagious Diseases Act for-the past year. If desired, they would procure one. That there was no reason why respectable natives should not obtain shooting licenses; but natives should respect the law relating to shooting birds out of season. ' That the Government whips were not authorized to frank telegrams. That the Government had not decided what representation should be made to Parliament as to the holding of .the next annual National Exhibition.
The following Bills were introduced A Bill to define the hours of labor within the Colony of New Zealand; a Bill to extend the hours of Polling at Parliamentary Elections; the Presbyterian Church Property Bill; Representation Act, 1881, Amendment Bill; the' Bible Beading in Schools Bill; the Alienation of Land Bill.
Mr Lance moved that all papers and correspondence relating to an inquiry held by the Christchurch Board be laid before this House. , Mr Rolleston moved that, there be laid before the House copies of the rules of any Co-operative Freehold Land Association, registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1877.'—Agreed to. '
Mr Bryce moved for a return showing the number of blocks of native land the title to which lias been determined by the Native Lands Court, from the date of its creation to 31st March, 1885, with the area, and number of .owners of each block respectively.—Agreed to. Mr Hurst moved for a return showing the annual expense incurred in the maintenance and additions to the Government residences since 1879 to the end of May, 1885, in' each year,—The motion was negatived,
Mi' Hurst moved for a return of the cost and travelling allowances drawn by each Minister and 5 attendants, since 1879, in each year.—Agreed to. Mr Rolleston moved that copies of all cosrespondenceand all memoranda by the Commissioner of Crown Lands in Canterbury to the Crown Solicitor, Canterbury, Mr Wason's solicitors, the late Minister of Lands (Mr Bolleston), the AttorneyGeneral, and the Solicitor-General, with reference to Mr Wason's several applications under- the Forest Trees Planting Act, be laid before this Houle.—Agreed to.
The House went into Cpipiittee on the Canterbury and Otago Marriages Bill, was passed without amendment. The Bill was read a tliird time and passed. The Patents Act, 1883, Amendment Bill was committed, read, a third time, and passed. The Mercantile Law Act Amendment Bill was committed, read a third time, and paased. The House adjourned at 5 p.m. till to-day.
