Messrs Stone and Son, of the Waipoua nursery, request us to state that they have appointed Mr P.J. Ward their agent in Masterton, and that next week they expect to receive a consignment of fruit trees from the South.

The anniversary of the Masterton Tent, 1.0. R., will be celebrated by a tea and concert at the Temperance Hall, on Thursday July 2nd. Tea will be on the tables at (i p.m., and the concert begins at 7.30. The admission will be merely nominal, so that a good attendance may be looked for.
Messrs Kibblewhite and Cameron blacksmiths, of this town, have instructed Messrs Williams and Barker to erect on the site of their premises, a commodious smithy and shop, 41ft by 30ft, which is necessitated by their increased trade. The new premises will be of great convenience to the many equestrians who use the Club Stables. The Greytown Volunteers met for inspection parade oil Tuesday night, about forty falling in. After drill and inspection, Major Bunny presented Lieut. Cameron'with an order for a now rifle which he had won at a recent competition. Sergt. Trotman was the recipient of the Hon. Surgeon's cup, and Sergt, Williamson of a cup presented by the Hon. Chaplain, Lucas, whoso escape from a hard labor gang at Timaru we noticed yesterday, was captured by Inspector Broliam and Constable Satchwell about midday. He was hiding in some gorse in the outskirts of the town. When captured lie said he wanted to see his wife. As Lucas was sentenced for a most brutal assault upon, his wife, it is probable that the visit would not liavo been a very pleasant one. A meeting of the Wairarapa Poultry Association was hold at the Council Chambers last evening, MrT. Parsons in the chair. The Committee submitted rules and regulations, and fclio prize list for the first show, which wore adopted. The date of the show was fixed for the 4th August. After a discussion as to the best means of promoting the objects of the Association generally, the meeting adjourned.
In the House of Representatives yesterday Mr Beetham gave notice of his intention to ask the Government whether they will lay on the table Mr Davy's report in connection with the case of Mr W. A. P. Sutton, A similar notice was given in the Legislative Council by the Hon. G. Randall Johnson.
Tho rails on the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Co.'s line having been laid to Paramatta, about sixteen miles from Wellington, a train conveying excursionists ran to that place yesterday, • Although the greater part of the line is. not yet ballasted, an average speed of twenty-five miles an hour was maintained, Residents in the Wairarapa will probably ask themselves the question why this rate cannot be attained on those portions of their line which pass over level country, The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held last evening, all members being present. The minutes of the previous meeting wero read and confirmed, and the Treasurer reported a debit balance of £2 Os 3d, Correspondence were read from the Education Board expressing the high opinion that body entertained of Mr Kay as a teacher, and regretting that they could not comply with the request of the Committee, ; The head master reported that the average attendance during the past month amounted to 420, also that the playground and weather sheds required gravelling, The. chairman submitted an estimate for flooring the sheds, which it was resolved'should be forwarded to the Board, Mr Girdwood kindly undertaking in the interview to see to the gravelling. Mr Payton called attention tothe condition of impecuniosity into which the committee had drifted ; they were not in a position to pay for cleaning the school. Mr Lowes suggested than an application be made to the Town Lands; Trust to tide over the temporary difficulty, and, on the motion of Mr Hogg, Messrs 1 Lowes and Girdwood and. the Chairman were appointed to, interview the Trust at its nejt'meeting to ask for its usual grant, Mr Reese then desired leave to discuss a paragraph in the Daily, which had been read by Mr Hogg at a previous meeting. The Chairman ruled Mr Reese out of order, and after some desultory discussion in which Messrs Hogg and Girdwood endeavored to force a debate on the question, the Chairman declared the business of the meeting concluded. Mr Stratford, R.M., held a sitting of the Revision Court at Grey town .yesterday, when, on the application of'Mr J. J. Freeth, Registrar of ' Electors, seven names were struck 1 off the roll for the electoral district of Wairarapa South, After the wedding at Kaiwaiwai, a notice of which appears in another column, the party indulged in a game of rounders, during which the bridegroom was struck so heavily on one of his knees that he will be unable to walk for some days. Tho tender hands of the newly-made bride, will, it is to be hoped, alleviate the pain. There seems to be some mistake about the Carterton footballers playing the Greytown team on Saturday next, says our local correspondent. The Carterton men tell me that.they have no intention of playing against Greytown or any other club on Saturday. Their instructions from the Association are to the effect that the Masterton and Greytown Clubs are to play their cup match, and that the Carterton team will then play the winners. They intend to abide by these instructions.
A monster Tea Meeting was held at the Salvation Barracks yesterday. About 200 persona sat. down to a substantial repast, Bupplied by Mrs Polling.' Whilst the tea was being cleared away and the room prepared for the after meeting, a band of officers and soldiers paraded the streets, singing to the accompaniment of the brass instruments, The Hall was and Staff-captain Hawkins led the meeting. He gave his experiences in his travels through Scotland and England, Several other adresses were delivered, and a good Collection was made.
Judging by the preparations which are being made, the entertainment in St, Matthew's Schoolroom to-morrow should be an unprecedented success, Among the peformers will be Misses Beard and Greenwood, (pianistea) and Misses Nicol, Deakin and Watson, and Messrs P. G. Moore, Stansfield, Coleman, Gant, Sellav, Foley, Berkley and Rapp, (vocalists), Orpheusglees will also be rendered, while Master E. Bennett is to giveti recitation, Several of the names we have given are new in our musical circles, but the public may rest assured that they will certainly not be among the least prominent when'the conceit is over. The programme will appear in our to-morrow's issue. The filial rehearsal takes place to-night, About 35 volunteers mustered at the inspection parade of the Carterton volunteers last night. They were put through drill by Captain T. Bennett, and Drill Instructor Bezar. Major Bunny was in attendance, and after • the drill was over complimented them upon their efficiency, and said he was very much pleased to see so many in attendance, He reminded them that there were some of them who had neglected to attend at the inspection drills, and hoped that in the next half year they would try to make them up. He stated that he was quite aware of the disadvantages which some of thenf were under on account of their various employments, but he would try to regulate inspection drills so that it would not interfere much with their other duties, and he hoped that they would avail themselves of the opportunity and attend, so that at the end of the year he might be able to send a good report to the Government on their good attendance and efficiency in their drill, He congratulated the company in having a captain who was quite competent to instruct them without the drill instructor, but at the same time promised them that that they should have the services of the Drill Instructor once a fortnight to assist their Captain. ' The Major also apoke of the disorderly conduct of some of the men in firing off blank cartridges out of the carriage windows of the train, when returning from Masterton on the Queen's Birthday, and though ho did not intend taking any action in the matter, he cautioned them against doing the like again. Mr A, McLcod has completed hi 3 repairs to the Ruamahunga Bridge at Te Ore Ore so far that traffic over it was resumed to-day.
■ In referenco to a paragraph in our yesterday's issue relative to a young girl being stopped at the Railway Station by her mother, we are requested by her parents to state that there is not the slightest truth in the rumor that she left her situation through any action on the part of her employer.
