The statement of the business of the Post Office Savings Bank during the past year, together with a comparative return from 1868, inclusive, has been laid before Parliament. Jt appears that the number of deposits has grown during'the seventeen years from 13,014 to 129,277, and their value from' L 194,536 to L1|227,909. Theaverage value of the deposits has thus decreased from Ll4 18s lid toL9 9s lid., The total amount standing to . the credit of depositors .it the end of 1884 was L 1,499,112, as against L 163.518.. In 1883 the amount was L 1,409,-751. The total amount of deposits last year was LI ,227,909, and the -withdrawals, L 1,195,531, the excess of the former over the latter being L 31,978, In 1883 the withdrawals exceeded the deposits by L 117,245, The cost of management has been L4OOO per annum; having increased to that amount from LTB9 in 1868. From the balance sheet of the Post Office accounts, we gatlier that the sum of Ll,394,4oohas'been invested in various ways, chiefly in Government deficiency bills, which represent L 483,100, and inscribed stock to the amount of L 250,000. The interest varies from 4 per cent to 7 per cent.
