The statement of the business of the Post Office Savings Bank during the past year, together with a comparative return from 1868, inclusive, has been laid before Parliament. From the balance sheet of the Post Office accounts, we gatlier that the sum of Ll,394,4oohas'been invested in various ways, chiefly in Government deficiency bills, which represent L 483,100, and inscribed stock to the amount of L 250,000. The interest varies from 4 per cent to 7 per cent.
