Beetham, Maunsell, Macquarie, MeCardle, Meredith, Dagg, and Hawkins. I Cr Beetham thought it was; .hardly, worth while 'to' call for tenders, ■ as ! they 1 understood that the bridge was to be
opened in ■ a few weeks. They might employ a man for a time. The resolution was agreed to. ~ mp. burgess' 'contract.
-The Chairman stated that a report had been sent in on Mr Burgess' metalling contact on the Mungapakeha road. He read a letter from Mr Burgess protesting against the seizure of his tools, and stating that the seizure was made without a minute's notice.
The Engineer reported that ho had seized the work in the interest of the Council, and recommended that the balance of £IBO 15s 8d be paid to Mr Burgess. The Finance Committee 1 recommended that the sum of £439 9s lOd, the estimated cost of completing Burgess' contract, being retained out of the £620 5s 6d, the entire sum remaining on the contract, viz., the sum of £lßolss Bd, be recommended to be paid to Mr .Burgess in full payment, of all his claims under the contract, provided that, if, after completion, any balance of the. y£439 9s 10d is unexpended, such unexpended balance shall be handed to | Mr Burgess, together withal! tools and plant taken over by the Council,—Agreed to, . '< " . LICENSING EXPENSES.. '. It was resolved that the Council did not see its way to allow the Clerk to the Licensing Committees more tjian actual travelling expenses. 1 '-A ' , ■ Mr Dowling's claim, Mr Bunny waited on the Council in reference to a claim of £lO, made by Mr M. Bowling, on -account of money retained by the officers of the Council from what ought to have been paid for a contract of. the'- Bideford road, on an allegation that he had, left certain things undone. That money had never been expended in the way it should have, and he therefore applied ' that it . should be refunded to him, ; Cr Beetham said the money had apparently been held back for certain work. Had that work been done? The Chairman promised thatthe matter, should be carefully considered. .?. At, a subsequent stage of the meeting, the consideration of the subject was resumed, Cr McCardle moved that the amount claimed be paid. Seconded by Cr Hawkins, and carried. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Alexander Andcrspji applied far remission of £ll6s, cosfe foy-summons issued to recover rgjtg?, It appeared from a discussion that Mr An(Je\'son held a receipt for the last year's rates, but that lie was sued for arrears, of which, he asserted, no notice was sent to him. 1 The County Clerk statod that he had duly sent notices to the. addresß supplied by the Property Tax Department. It haying been shewn that receipts, been given for the past tws 3[sira rates, it was resolved tfie Amount be and that m future the amount of arrears should be put on rate notices. Several applications for the services of the Engineer were received and granted. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Hawkins, seconded by CrDagg, that one month's extension of time be granted to Mr J. Inspector, as requested, ' ADJOURNED, The following motion, of which Cr Hawkins had given notice, was ordered to stand over till next meeting:—That it is desirable that all bridges in the County which exceed in span 25ft. in one single span, should be vested in, and repairable by the County, whether on district or main roads, and that with a view to give effeet to this resolution, the Minister of Public Works, the Premier or Colonial Treasurer be asked to provide by legislation in the coming session, fpWMJK.
