THE WAIRARAPA EAST COUNTY ROLLS.
._ o If an increase in the number of properties in a district can be taken as a sign of progress, then it must be admitted ihat the County of Wairarapa East has been making steady and rapid strides. The rolls for the year have now been prepared, and, though they have not yet passed the Revision Court, they may be accepted as tolerably correct. In the Alfredton Riding the number of properties in 1882 was 247; in 18834 this had increased to 319, while now, in 1885, it stands at 389, being an increase of 142 in three years. In the Masterton Riding there were 482 in 1882, 514 in 1883-4, and 565 in the current year, showing an increase of 83 in three years. In the Castlepoint and Wainuioru Ridings there has been no marked change. Owing to the adjustment of boundaries between the Castlepoint, Alfredton, and Masterton Ridings, which bus taken place recently, the figures given do not show the relative position of the Ridings correctly; but taking the three as a whole there is an increase of •225 holdings, which, we think, must be looked upon as a very satisfactory proof of progress,
