Mv W. E. Hall, dental surgeon, intends paying a visit to Masterton on the 20th inst., for the one day only. The mail steamer Australia, with the London mails of 23rd ult, left San Franoisco on Sunday last for Auckland, one day later than time-table date. The seat on the WairarapaEast County Council which has become vacant by the resignation of Mr F, Maunsell, is likely to be warmly contested. We are informed that Messrs Handysido, R, Maunsell, H. Speaking on Government Insurance Colonel Trimble in addressing his constituents at Taranaki is reported to have said:—He maintained that as the Government guarantees the policy-holders they should be paid for this guarantee, or a guarantee fund should be set apart from the profits, One provision of the new bill was im improvement, and that was a certain percentage of profits should be put aside till the amount uf the guaranteefund shallamount to £1,000,000. This will not bo taken from the old policies. He thought the members of the Central Board were not sufficiently paid, They now received a couple of pounds ,t silting. They were not paid enough to make it worth their while to go thoroughly into the affairs, and the consequence was they wore dependent for the whole of the information on the manager of the Association, They should either be persons whose business it was permanently to look after the affairs, or else the appointments should only bo honorary, Paying each of the local directors £IOO a year was a waste of money. Beyond travelling expenses nothing should be paid, and he believed just as good men would he got as were obtained for municipal and other bodies.

The following extract from a private letter just received by the mail from » late resident in Christchurch, who went home in the R.M.S. Tongariro, may not be uninteresting:—"The mostinteresting part of the voyage, and the most wonderful, was the passage through the Magellan Straits; and if people only knew what they gained by going by the N.Z.S. Company'slilie through this wonderfulscenory, the 'Frisco line, as regards passengers, would, I think, soon be a thing of the PAjjt, The first view you get when sighting f-|jp Straits is a vast snowfield lying in the hills, of miW man y m '' ea °ff' On the north of the entrance is a long line of hills, and on the south you can clearly see Cape Horn, #.nd many largo rocks standing n)one foi? away at sea. The channel at the eubange js very narrow, as it is in many paits going through; indeed, in one or two places, where there happens to be a turning, you begin to think you are going to be dashed (gainst the cliffs, On either side of these wondfirful Straits you see yast snowfields and glaolc-vs, coining, in some parts, right down to the water's edge. These are interspersed with beautiful waterfalls; and, altogether, the sight !b one whjcji can never be forgotten."
in the Resident-.Magistrate's Court at Jfapier yesterday judgment was given in the cose, Official Assignee v Arthur Desmond, Thip was a case in which the Official Assigneo sued Desmond for LIOO, albged to be due on an 1.0. U. found among the papers in the bankrupt estate of W. Harker. The original 1.0. U. was for L 237, the amount' said to have been paid by Harker for Desmond's expenses when he contested the Hawke's Bay seat at the last election, The items were disputed, and the Official Assignee,.to bring the claim before the Oourt, sued for LIOO only, Desmond denied having signed the 1.0. U., and the magistrate found there was not sufficient evidence to support the signature, and on that point he nonsuited the plaintiff, but on the bill of particulars gave judgment for the plaintiff for L4O, with coats, Heilbron's German Worm Cakes and Fitzgerald's Koromiko Extract are Patented.—AnvT.

Tenders are invited by Mr A. J. Rawson, Surveyor, for forming carriage drives and approaches to Mr Caselberg'a new residence in Worksop road. To give residents in the Wairarapa ah opportunity of attending the performance of the Silver King, tho late train on Saturday next will leave Wellington at 11. 15 p.m. and run right through to Masterton the same night.' Mr Edward Wyllie has brought out a photographic cartoon on the local option poll which is being taken to-day. In the foreground is the new applicant going away with tears in his eyes, followed by a constable. To the right are the heads of the leading temperance men, stuck on bottles, ai.d to the left those of tho hotel keepers, similarly mounted. The centre is occupied by a man who holds a tumbler in each hand, and on the stream of liquor flowing from ono of them to the other appear the words "No more pubs for us." The card is nicely got up, and the public appears to be greatly taken with it.' The local option polling is creating a good deal of excitement to-day. Each party is well supplied with buggies tobring voters to the polling booth, and it would be a matter of some difficulty to hire a vehicle to carry passengors. Canvassers are actively engaged putting the position pro. and con., and in inducing those who are indifferent to record their votes. Up to the time we went to press, about 130 votes had been recorded, and the temperance party claimed that the majority of ithese had been recorded in their favor; but, of course, the ballot box cannot tell its tale until 6 o'clock, the hour at which the poll closes. Our former townsman, Mr J, C. B. Golder, whose efforts as a poet have from time to time come under our notice, has published a little volume undor the somewhat strange title of "The book of Judgment," being a relation of some of his experiences in life. The whole is full of weird fancies and prophecies, the latter of which, ho feels assured, will be fulfilled, Ab a frontispieoo appears a photograph of the author. It is to be hoped that Mr Golder had a dream to the effect that the volume would find a ready sale, for he relates that when pubishing a previous work it was revealed to him that twelve copies would be sold, and exactly that numberdid find purchasers. The book is printed "at Napier.
