RESCUING CATTLE, Nga to Manihera was charged with having rescued cattle which were being driven to the pound by William Griffin, and pleaded not guilty, Mr Beard appeared for the prosecution. William Griffin, a farmer residing near the Waingawa, deposed that on the Ist April he saw a steer on his fenced land, and told defendant that- if he did not remove it by the following morning, he should take it to the pound, On the 2nd he sent his two boys with fhe beast to the. pound; but ant drive the steer into a paddook. He spoke to him and told him that as hp had dope suph a thing before, proceedings would be taken; Defendant said he did not care, He did not witness the rescno, William Griflin, jun„ said he saw the steer on his father's land, and was told to. drive it to the pound, He was going down the river with it, when defendant rushed down the bank and drove it off. It had been driven about a mile and a-half. He drove it on to his own land. It was not on Maori land at the time, but on the river bed. Kenneth Griffin, another son of plaintiff, gave similar evidence. For the defence it was urged that the steer was on the ground of Isaiah, the grandfather of defendant, when the rescue took place, and witnesses were called to prove this.. •Hjg Worship held that the case had been prqyed, and imposed a fine qf £2, and £ll9s costs,. including 8s personal expenses to plaintiff, and 4g each {or his sons, ■..';.
