MASTERTON-MANGAHAO SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.

A special general meeting of. the Association was held in the Institute on Saturday evening. The weather prevented a large attendance, only about a dozen members, being present. Mr A. Reeso was voted to the chair, and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, A letter was read re survey and preparation of survey, and a memo from the Minister of Lands notified that there would be no objection to the town, sections being one acre, as proposed by the Association. Two resignations were received from Pahktua, and one application for enrollment was received from Wellington. Mr Reese resigned the chair by permission in favor of Mr A. W. Renall, The following members were elected a committee, viz., J. Marriot, A. Reese, A. W. Hogg, T. P. Girdwooc', A. Yule, H. Fulcher, and R, Evernden. \ Mr Hogg said he would like to see a good committee of working; men. His only reason for consenting to act on the Committee was that he had the welfare of the Association at heart, and had the time-'to devote •to its interests. He referred to the mud pelting that had been recently enacted; and repelled with scorn the assertion that had been made throughMr Parsons, by .the- man really behind, his back, Mr Park, that he was workinp in the interets of' the journal he represented, and not for the society, • He had never stooped to such a thing, nor during his long career as a journalist had such an insinuation been made • against him before; "■••'•'•'

No other membors being nominated on the Committee the sevon named were duly elected the Committee of the Association. The defaulters' list was read, and Mr Reese suggested that the time for strikin? off their names as members be oxtended to next Saturday, Mr Hogg thought the defaulters 1 list should be left in the. hands of the committee. He thought it hard to strike off the names of people who, living at a distance from Mastevton, had probably not got their notice, or from inability to reach town, had failed to pay up, and to avoid any injustice he would move-That the list of unpaid members be relegated to the Committee to be dealt with, andreport to a fature meeting. Mr Reeso gave notice that at the next meeting he would move that each member be allowed to voto by proxy. Mr Reese entered into some figures showing the probable cost of complying with the conditions, and pointing out that the members had really every encouragement as far as the Government was concerned, and it would be their own fault if they did not make ut comfortable independency out of their sections. Mr Hogg also remarked in a similar strain, contending that if the members could meet their payments to the Government out of the single item of Buller, there was every reason to believe that with a very little energy they would establish permanent houses for themselves and their families.

The usual votes of thanks concludei the meeting.
