WAIRARAPA EAST COUNTY.

A meeting of the Works Committee of the Council was held yesterday. The following is'a synopsis of the resolutions passed ; That the Engineer be instructed to. have the necessary repairs made to the Ttnui bridge, the work to be let by public tender. • That the Engineer be authorised to take over the road diversion at Messrs Downes it Henderson's railway contract in the Forty-Mile Bush, when he considers it properly completed. That the consideration of the question of the legalisation of roads be allowed to stand over till further information has been obtained, and that tho Clerk bo instructed to make inquiries tlirougk Mr G. Beetham as to whether the land (Takomaitu) is Grown land or not. That it be left with a Committee consisting of the Chairman and Or Hawkins to confer with the Rangitikei and other County Councils on the question of the construction of roads, and with the Minister of Lands. Tho estimates of the Engineer for the maintenance of roads were gone through and reduced. That the following rates be struck Maiterton riding one farthing, Alfrcdton, five sixteenths, Wainuiorou, three sixteenths, Castlopoint, five sixteenths. The total amount required for the Castlepoint Hiding is £1532, and as the separate rate will only produce £615 the Committee recommends that a special rate of |-d be levied.

The Committee then proceeded with the Waipoua overflow, and resolutions wero carried to the effect that as serious damage is likely to result during the ensuing winter, the Council will have to look to tho Government, to pay the necessary expense in repairs. That the plans proposed by the Government for dealing with the overflow are too expensive, and impossible for the settlers, and would also seriously endanger the works on the lluamahanga. That the works proposed by the County Engineer would certainly be a temporary, and probably a permanent remedy, and they trust that the Government will enable them to cany out the ivorks as proposed by him. If the Government do not approve of this, the Council must tlirow the responsibility of maintenance of the main road from Masterton on the Government. .
