FERNRIDGE SCHOOL EXAMINATION.
Tlie examination of this school was conducted by Mr Lee on Monday and Tuesday, and' was of the most satisfactory nature throughout,' in spite of the attendance during two months of. the year, when the scarlet-feverand diphtheria scare reduced the attendance to half the number on the roll. . 86 .per cent passed in the standards, the majority of the candidates being well up to the mark, and making strong passes. Such a result was
almost more than could have boon anticipated, and must bo regarded with pleasure. The total number of failures in the whole school was seven. Mr Lee stated that the school had been woll .well taught, and expressed the opinion ■that;-the percentage of passes was as gveat*as'a'ny teacher could expect to see. Ho concluded his remarks by impressing .upon/children the necessity of regular attendance. The following particulars are given Standard 1, presented, 11, passed, ten ;■ Standard 11, presented, 16, passed, 14; Standard 111, presented, 10, passed;'!);.' Standard IV, presented, 9, passed,"9; Standard V, presented, 0, passed, _4.; .Standard VI. presented,' 4, passed, 3. 7 ALFRE'DTON'ROAD BOARD. A meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday the 24th Maicli, when the following members were present. Present—Messrs Macquarie (Chairman), Kebbell, Napier, Baylis and Saunders. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, . . , Resolved—That a general rate of a|d in the £, on all properties in the district, be levied for the year ending 31st March, 1885.
The following inward correspondence was read:— :
From Pahiatua Road Board requesting the co-operation of the Board in obtaining control of the Forty-Mile Bush road.
' Resolved—That this Board cannot see the. wisdom of the Road Boards obtaining control of the main road, and that to interfere might be the means of depriving the road of any grant from the Government for maintenance.
. From Mr Jones, ..with report on road line into Garter's section.
Resolved that an application be made to the Waste Lands Board for a sum sufficient to fall 30 chains one chain wide, and stumped 12 feet wide, and that the Lands Board be asked for a statement of all monies now due to the district on deferred payment.Resolved, that the question of falling the bush along the Eketahuna road be referred to representatives in the Council, With the request that they .would endeavour to get the Council to take it up, it being a main road, and under the jurisdiction of that body. Resolved, that Mr Alpass be applied to, te allow a slight deviation on' the Alfredton district road, and that the Board reasonably compensate him, Resolved, that the removal of some slips on the District road be left with Mr Kebbell to look'after, and some slight alterations on the same road be left in the hands of the Chairman.
There being 110 tenders received for the Mangaone branch road, it was resolved that the time be extended to the 7th of April at 12 noon, and the Chairman and Mr Kebbell were appointed to receive and deal with, them, .
The annual election of members in place of those who retire this year was fixed for the sth of May, the retiring memherq being and Macqiiarie. Resolved, that the Olerk be authorised to take the necessary steps for recovery of all rates on properties appearing on the valuation roll under " Owner,"
