MESSRS STEVENS & GORTON,S ANNUAL RAM FAIR.
• The annual ram and sheep fair was held by the enterprising firm of auctioneers, Messrs Stevens & Gorton at their yards, Bulls, and was a great success. There' were about 12,000 sheep yarded, the principal portion of which were Bold under the hammer at satisfactory prices. Colonel Gorton wielded thehammer, starting punctually at 1 o'clock, and was kept at it until G p.m. without any intermission whatever. Although the principal feature of the fair is the offering for public competition of a number of pure-bred stud, rams and ewes, yet there wore some thousands of sheep of both eexes and all ages offered for sale. To show the extent of the sale there were 42 lots submitted to auction, consisting of wethers, ewes
and lambs, which wore not catalogued. Amongst these lots we noticed some well bred sheep, One pen of owes fetched 10s but another was passed in afcßsGd. the vendor wanting a higher prioe or them. A pen of lambs fetched 6s 6d. A fine lot of wethers were passed in at 103, the vondor wanting 12s 6d for them. How. ever, as 1 before stated, the principal portion of the lots were gold under the hammer.
The first lot submitted from the catalogue were 36-tooth pure pedigree ewes, by sire bred by the late Major Willis, out of ewes bred from Ludlamewes, and were bought byMrD. Knight at 20s; 13 lambs (mixed sexes), bred by tho same gentleman, wero knocked down to Mr W. Baker at. 10s; 103 pure-bred Romney Marsh-ewes were passed in. at 12s The pure pedigree Lincoln stud rams were then submitted for competition, tho first in order being : On account of F. Larkworthy, Esq.—. Nine two-tooth, rams—three by the imported pure .pedigree sire King Tom, bred by Messrs Dudding, of Lincolnshire ; six by the imported pure pedigree sire King Rufus, bred by the same gentleman, out of pure pedigree ewes bred from imported stock, none of the stock, having ever been offered for sale in tho colony before: Lot 1 and lot 8 were knocked down to Mr R. Wilson, manager of the Otakapu Station for the sums of 7gs, and Ojgs. respectively; lots 2, 4 and 7 were bought by Mr F. Y, Lethbridge for 3gs., 2|gs., and 3gs. respectively'; lot 3; %5.," Mr E. Newman; lot 6,3|g5., Mr J. T. Dalrymple; lot 6, 3gs., Mr.J, Beal; lot 9, 3gs., Messrs Pascal Bros. Eleven two-tooth pure pedigreo Lincoln stud rams—four by the imported pedigree sire King Rufus; seven by pure pedigree Bires, bred by the Hon, Mr Holmes, Otago, out of pure pedigree ewes, bred from imported stock: Lots 10 and 20 wero purchased by Mr P. Y. Lethbridge for 2jgs. and Gea.; lot 11, %s., Mr J. T. Dalrymple; lots 12 sgs., 15 3|gs., 17 4gs.,' 19 sgs, Messrs Pascal Bros; lot 13, fig., Mr R. Wilson; lots 14 J. G. Thorns; lot IG, 3|gs,, Mr J. Beal. The bidding for the foregoing lota was very spirited. On account of J. G. There were some pure pedigree Romney Marsh we? offered in lots of twenty.five on aocount of the trusteess in the. estate of the late Major Willis, but as they did not come up to the reserve of one guinea each, they were passed in. On account of Donald Fraser Esq. there were some half-bred merino and Lincoln rams offered. Mr S. Weston bought six at'ljgs. There were offered some Shropshire Down rams, which were not catalogued: L0t312, lg., Mr W. Howie; lot 313, Iks., 315, %, Mr Bendy; lots 314, lfgs.,3l6,lfgs.,MrW.Galpin. There.were a few other rams sold, which were not catalogued, at satisfactory prices.
