ANNUAL STOCK SALE.
Tho annual stock Balo at the Oroua Downs has how become one of tho most important on the West Coast, As a proof of the popularity of this sale, fully 300 persons were present, from alhparts of (die district; The-weather.' was -exceedingly' fine..' The .stock catalogued comprised purebred 'shorthorn and'AyrsHire' bulls,"Lincoln, Romney.'•'Marsli;'an'd ; .Shropshire Down pure-bred'rams,'fat ana!; store cattle and sheep; and-a very superior, lot ;of 'draft horses from the Oroua 'Downs"and Carnarvon .estates. The'stock, with the exception-of'ihe 'two'-' year-old mixed and store cattle, was all' exceedingly gopd ; the beef and fat sheep, especially, receiving favourable comment. Messrs Stevens and Gorton commenced the sale shortly after one o'clock, and were kept pretty busy at it until a late hour in the afternoon., The fat bullocks were the first' offered, and were passed in, the best bid being £7 7s 6d; we believe the reserve was £B. A very fine lot of prime fat cows. (BO) £5 Os were bought by Mr W. McKenzie (Barber), and the balance (50) by Mr R, Stevens (Wellington Meat Preserving Company) £4los, Mr Nicholson purchased 38 head of mixed yearlings at 25s 6d; 46 head store cows and 9 calves given in at £2;' and 38 head of two-.! year-old mixed cattle at 355. Six .pure-pedigree bulls were offered, but only two found purchasers—viz,, Baronet (shorthorn) (No 496 New Zealand Herd Booh), roan, calved Bth September 1878, bred by Mr John Deans, Riccarton, by King of > the Butterflies (83 N); dam Daisy (342 C), by Young Sir Leopold (133 C); second dam Dainty (149 C), by Young Dover (53 C); third dam, a Homebush cow, was. purchased by Wirihana Hunia, for 24g5,, and the" Parewanui Maoris are to be congratulated on their purchase,. Mr G, Williams, Saudon,. bought a purebred Ayrshire bull, by Neil Fleming, for sgs, The fat wethersreserve 125., and ewes 10a od., bought by Mr W. McKenzie. A pen pf. forward ewes found a purchaser in Mr Bell, at' Bs, lOd,; and a nice lot of store ewes fell to Messrs. Halcombe and SheorwiU's bid, at 8s 9d. Mr Larkworfchy's two-tooth owes fetched 7s 6d.. (Mr Cameron) andja pen of 558 mixed, lambs, 2s Id, (Mr J, Stevens), The rams were next sold, and as there \m absolutely no reserve upon them, they were ''given away" as follows :

Robinson); Lot 35. one pure pedigree ram,, 10s, (E. Wheeler); Lot 36, one pure pedigree ram, £1 Is. (&. Wheeler); Lgt 37, one pure pedigree ram, £l|s, (Flßflbingpn),'' ' Sixteen pure-bred; Shropshire Down rams were also offered, by permission, on' account of Mr J, W. Gower, They were very fine sheep and highly spoken of, being reserved at 3 and 4 guineas. Messrs Milner, Giffard, and McLennan were the only buyers, the former secured one, and the latter two each, A very fine team of 8 working bullocks was purchased by Mr W. Bell, of Halcombe, at 11015 s, per head, chains and gear given in, and a few Victorian prize churns also found purchasers, The heavy draught horses by President were next offered, and realised very satisfactory prices, A draught filly topped tho list at £35, being bought by Mr A Lumsden, A very fine pair of draught greys brought 42 guineas, and were bought by Mr J, T, Tennant; a draught filly was knocked down to Mr Gillies for 10gs,, and another to Mr A, Lumsdeen at 24gs, A draught maro, by President with foal at foot, by Oliver Cromwoll,was passed in, 20gs. being refused, and a draught gelding by the same siro was also passed in £2O being the best bid, A chesnut colt by Oliver Cromwell was bought by Mr F. Campbell of Fielding for 21gs, Several hacks were also sold at prices ranging from £6 7s 6 to £1 10s
A throughbred mare (offered by the executors in the estate of the late Doctor Diver) was, by permission, subjected to competition: a bid of 20gs, was madebutshe was passed in at lOOgs, Taken altogether, the sale was very successful. We must not omit to mention that, before the sale commenced, tho company partook of a very substantial luncheon, The woolshed in which the tables were laid out, was very nicely decrated.
