CORRESPONDENCE
THE REV. MR ISITT AND " 1VO." to THi Editor. Snt,—l was rather surprised (and not'a little amused), at the assertion made by Mr Isitt on Monday evening—" That it was easy for such men as' Iyo' at QP sjiilling a head to try and undo the work done by missionaries, and that every settler in New Zealand was indebted to those selfsacrificing pioneers (the missionaries) for their present comfort and freedom from danger. Of course, the rev. gentleman was perfectly safe, where he was, in uttering this unmitigated bit of claptrap, and getting applauded for it. I wonder he did not consider what outsiders would think of it, tho natural inforence they would draw would be that the rev. gentleman's knowledge of the past history of New- Zealand was like Sam Weller's vision—limited. Mr Isitt will find, if he reads up, that we are indebted to such men as Generals Shute and Cameron, Major Von Tempsky, and the soldiers under their command, for our present securo position, and that it would have been a poor look out for the early pioneer settlers if they had had to depend on any influence of the mission for their protection. The covert sneer thrown out by the Rev. gentleman about the shilling a head was unworthy of a man in his position. "Ivo" has as much right to make a collection for his sermons as the Rev. gentleman to send round the plate at tho conclusion of his service, Mr Isitt has yet to learn that it is the right of every man to speak out the result of his honest thought, without being held up to scorn by those who differ from him in opinion, either social, political, or religious.
I am &c, Frbethinker,
MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

POWDER MAGAZINE, The Council went into Committee to consider the application of M. Caselberg & Co,, and the Mayor being interested in the matter left the meeting. Cr Horon was elected Chairman. .-. Cr Williams moved that the application of Messrs Caselberg & Co be granted, - provided the site was approved by the Works Committee and Sergeant McArdle as representative of the Government. The resolution was carried, and the report was adopted in Council, and the Mayor took his seat again. GARBAGE. The Committee to report upon tho disposal of rubbish, recommended that no rubbish be allowed to be deposited in the Waipoua river bed, and that refuse should be removed in licensed carts to any place as directed by the Committee or Inspector of Nuisances. Cr Muir moved the adoption of the report and stated there was a bye-law dealing with the removal of garbage, and that it should be enforced.. Cr Williams seconded the report andsaid the riverbed was a veiy objectionable site upon which to deposit the refuse. They had failed to find a suitable site but considered some place should be secured quite outside the Borough.—Carried. THE WORKS COMMITTEE reported thatMrGirdwoodhad completed the formation of Columba Road and was now metalling it. Culverts had been put in in Renall-street and a breast-work erected about three-quarters of a chain long. Tho timber for the Waipoua bridge had been prepared, and the work had been arranged with Mr Bremner. The following works were recommended for the ensuing twelve months to be undertaken in the order named:—lst, Villastreet West, about 10 chains formation and metalling ; 2nd, Victoria-street, to connect with Villa-street, 3| chains: 3rd, Worksop road, 40 chains; 4th, Renallstreet to complete widening and footpaths; sth, Dixon-strcet, opening up for traffic ; Ctli, Gladstone road, about 30 chains formation and metalling, The Committee drew attention to certain streets that had been opened up in contravention of the Municipal Corporations Act. Cr Heron moved the adoption of the report, The Committee had done their best to deal fairly in recommending the works upon the streets named. As regarded the two streets named, the parties opening up these streets had not complied with the Act by metalling and handing over the same to the Council. The Mayor said it would bo bettor to take the report seriatim, which was agreed to. PUBLIC WORKS FOR 1885, Cr Heron moved and Cr Muir seconded, that about ton chains of Villa-street West be inserted in the schedule of works as first to be done,—Carried. The Mayor moved that notice be piven to A. Cockburn and G, C, Bennington, fcljat they take immediate steps to comply with the Ast jp. fprming and metalling the streets laid off by them, and making the same over to the Council. Seconded by Cr Heron and carried. THE MORGUE, Reference was made to the proposal to erect a morgue, and the Town Clerk reported that tho estimate was £45 for the building, that the Cemetery Trust had offered a site, and the County Council were willing to contribute £lO towards the cost, the Masterton Road Board stating they had no funds at their disposal for such a purpose. The Mayor thought tho Council ought to erect the morgue. It was a permanent thing for tho Borough, and it was a disgraco that they had no building for such an object. Or Muir said in his opinion tho building was not large enough as shown on the plan aud that the site in theoemctery was not a suitable one as tho jury at an inquest would have to take a long journey to view the body and then return to town. He would rather see a jury room in connection with the morgue. The Mayor moved that the Council accept the £lO from tho County Council and the' building be proceeded with. This was not seconded. Or Perry moved that a deputation consisting of the Mayor, and Cr Muir wait upon tho County Council with a view to induce them to contribute the half-cost of the erection of a morgue. Cr Heron seconded tho motion which was carried, THE BOROUGH ENDOWMENT, This question was held over from last meeting, The Mayor said he was afraid the Councillors did not sufficiently appreciate endowments, There were 700 or 800 acres of land belonging to the Borough in the Magaone Block and the Council was asked to contribute £75 to the Government towards road clearing. The question had been considered in committee and the expenditure of the sum was not approved. It might be advisable to go to some expense and obtain another report. Cr Perry expressed his willingness to go up and pay his own expenses, Cr Johnston said he was one of the Com-mitteewhoreportedonthenon-advisability of expending £75 and he was quite in the dark as to the locality and value of the ground and thought it necessary that a report should be obtained on the land. He had no objections to ride up and spend a day or two there but that was not sufficient.
The Mayor proposed that a committee consisting of Crs Heron, Perry, Chamberlain, and Johnston go up to the block and that they report upon the value of the land to the Council and the best use to put the reserve to. The necessary expenses of the Committee to be paid. Seconded by Cr Williams and carried, The Council then adjourned.
