A verandah in George Street fell on to the footpath to-day. Several persons were underneath at the time, and one was killed and tho others injured more or less severely.

Major-Goneral Scratchley will proceed to New Zealand by the steamship Tarawcra, leaving to-day. The manager of tho National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand reports of the local markets as follows— Shipping wheat has a slightly improved tendency at 3s 7d; malting barley depressed at 4s to 4s 9d; New Zealand feeding oats show no material change, and are, if anything, weaker. Quotations 2s 9d to 3s 3d. Milling sorts are steady, but not in active demand, at 3s 3d to 3s od New Zealands oats, under bond, continue slow of sale at 2s Gd to 2s fld. The market for kauri timber is steady, but not active. Quotations unchanged. Arrived, this afternoon—Tarawera, from Bluff.
