Betting at the post—3 to 1 Sou'-Wester or Black Rose", 2 to 1 Tigredia, 50 to 1 Fusilier, 60 to f Lady; Evelyn, 10 to 1 Gaiters, 10 to 1 Administrator.

This, of course, was the big event of the meeting, and the interest manifested in it was subsequently rewarded.by the magnificent race which resulted... As will bo seen from the hotting quotations, Tigredia was a warm favourite at the post at a short price, although in consequence of a rumour that Sou'wester had been largely backed by the stable, the son of Goldsboroygh. waj inquired for in a good many plapeß, As' the §eypraj animals saddled up thoy wero.-jn turn surrounded by admiring knots of spectators, Black Rose being an especial favorite. The start was an exceedingly good one, Tho Administrator went to the front at once, and got a lead of about alength, which wasnoverwrestedfromhim Next came Ugly Buck who presently left the ruck and challenged the roan, while the rest were in a heat, Black Rose and Tigredia evidently waiting. Thus earlyFusilier began to fall away, and was never in the race. Coming round the far turn Ugly Buck was close on Administrator's quarters, next, then Black Rose, Lady Evelyn, Tipradia, Armorer, and Gaiters all of a lump. Round the home turn the same order was maintained but the journey up the straight altered the positions a little, and past the' Btand the.order was something in this way:— Administrator, leading by a length, Ugly Buck second, Close on the. Buck came Lady Evelyn, Black Rose, and Tigredia level, and all going at a warm pace. Then came Armorer, Gaiters, and Fusilier, the latter miles away. At the top turn Tigredia left the two she had been running with, and mad,e an unavailing effort to come up with.the leaders. Almost immediately Black Rose made an effort, and amidst the greatest excitement, collared, and ran level with the favorite, the Buck and Administrator still, however, being well ahead, In this way they came to the home turn, Lady Evelyn coming up hand over hand, while Ugly Buck showed signs of distress. Rounding into the strait, Mr Tancred's

horse was still in the van, Sou'wester, Lady Evelyn, and Ugly Buck all of a heap, racing for second place. The excitement was now intense, and a perfect babel of voices roared for Tigredia, Black Rose having fallen back beaten. Tigredia, however, had not got enough left in, and Lady Evelyn and Sou'wester came away from her rapidly. A grand race ensued, but The Administrator was not to bo beaten, and he won, galloping aB if his heart were in it, by a length from Sou'wester, who was about a length and a half in front of Lady Evelyn. The win was a very popular one, although very few had supported the "little joker" in the totalisator. Timo, 3min lOlsec.
