Haweka, Thursday. Yesterday afternoon Michael Bourke, brewer, and Harry Hughes, brewer's assistant, were charged with- having knowingly conveyed.spirits on which full duty was not paid,'and Thos. Lloyd, publican, was charged with having in his possession spirits on which full duty wbb not paid, All three wero remanded. It is understood that distillation has been going on in some part of this district variously stated to be Kakaramea, Woodville, and Manutahi, for the past' eight or nine months, and that a large number of people'are implicated. Mr Lundon and Sergeant Anderson left Hawera yesterday for the purpose, it is supposed, of seizing the plant. •-..•• . Later information with regard to the illicit still business is that a still has been discovered on Otoia Opahu block, between Woodville and Manutahi. The further arrests are ..those of. George Beamish, ex-publican at Patea,.and John Anderson, one of the whiskey riiakers. One, Jessop, of illicit whiskey-making fame, will be a. witness for. the prosecution in this instance.

The detectives have for some,weeks past been shepherding Mrs Oonnell, who is the wife of Cornelius Connell, onoof the persons suspected of having had a hand in tho Randwick murder, N.S.W., and who made his escape from that colony, and 'it was[supposed Mrs Connell had come to Auckland to meet her husband. It now transpires that Connell is not here, but is believed to be at Suva, Fiji.
