Dunedin, January 29. The Fire competition was resumed to-day in capital 'weather, but the attendance, of. tlie-public was very poor. The programme is not throuph, but it is not known yet whether it will be gone on with to-morrow, Protests have arisen in numbers, and only one contest lias actually, been got off without a hitch. The thing began badly this morning. In the engine practice competition, which was finished. yesterday, and won by Napier, with the- Spit- second, Anojdand third, and Dunedin .fourth, ,the judges disqualified Auckland on account of their joints not being spanner tight, and Dunedin for having two joints loose. • Thereupon Superintendent Hughes of Auckland, after using language more forcible than polite about the Dunedin firenjen and the judges, marched Ms men off the field. This example was followed by the Grahamstowji men, who, however, explained that they had determined the previous night to do so, as, there not.being sufficient pressure of water on the ground, tho competition was unfair and valueless.. Chrisichuech, This Day. At three this morning a briok store and a wooden dwelling-house at Woolston, belonging to Mr James: Oourtenay, was burnt down. Courtenay and his family escaped in their night clothes, and nothing was saved,
