That the Commiitee of the whole Board form a Finance Committea and a Works Committee, three to form a quorum for finance and two for works; The Engineeis report was read and adopted as follows
Alfredton Road Diatrict.—The road formation works on the district'line through Alfredton art drawing towards completion and maybe expected to ho out of, hands in the course of three weeks, A careful examination of these has recently been made, and the contractor's attention directed to the various defects which have been discovered in their execution, The construction, of the bridges is still delayed owing to the impassable state, of the Alfredton to Eketahuna road for • heavy, traffic. A contract has, however, been entered into for hauling the materials, and this will.be hurried forward with all speed so soon as the state of the roads will permit of its : being executed. Maitertoh Road District.—The formation worb on the Opaki to Eangitumau have not yet been finally completed. ■ THis does not, so manner, although hindered by the very broken state of the weather, Of the loan raised for the construction of this line there still remains a balance of £SO over tho amount pledged for contracts already let. I will recommend to the Board to have this sum expended in improving the drainage of tho line by deepening and opening up the shallow watercourses,- which are at present chokod with silt and other refuse to from the side drain, until aome .provision of this sort iB made for the escape of the surface water it will be difficult to secure a solid foundation for the road bed along the lower
levels of the line. I am of opinion that this balance cannot be more judiciously laid out than in the manner I suggest, The cost of tho necessary repairs to the line of road leading to MrWm, lorns' has been estimated at £2, I will recommend that this be granted to him as he has expressed Ills'willingness to execute tho work at that price, I have prepared an estimate of the probable cost of fitting and fixing a sub- . sfantial punt at tho crossing of the Ruamahunga •riverat.'je Whiti'i-- The punt will be .capable of carrying a single", horse and.'dray, with load, with the necessary hands to work the punt. The sum which will; W required for this pj&jse is so considerably hi excess of what I ben™ the MastertonJßoard are capable of 'raising'from • funds available for' expenditure on'tbis line, that unless some liberal assistance • towards the cost of the work is given by the.CartertonTaritahi Road Board (the ratepayers of which make considerable use of the, line).theproposal will have to be shelved for the present, until the rates accumulate sufficiently : to warrant the penditure, :'•-, ' ' pi . iJfo..3 havi. visited the Miki-Miki,' * andexaininedintotho'dispute.between Messiß : .
