PASTORAL SOCIETY.

A meeting'of thfcWairarapa- i)hd East Goast.Bastoi'aJ Society was held in the Council 1, Chambers/, on Saturday.-' present—Messrs W. -.0. Buchanan (president), A; '•■ Matthews, Hr-R. Biinny, H. Braithwaite, B. Boys, H, 'McMaster, lI.' : R. Armstrong, E. Poffet, H. Anderson, J," Reynolds, M. i)onalj), D. McMaster, J. Druinmond, and J. Stnckey,

;.;.;The minutes of. tho previous meeting were t'ead.and coufirined. " • '.The''Treasurer reported that the :'years-reaei'n'ta.aihOunted to ,£296 10s, an3-.the years expenses to £320 Os Sd. The'revenue accruing from .members' ticket's had been falling off for the last three -years,. -.- Three years ajjp the revenue--from, this source amounted .-.to £204, next year £l6O, and last year £142 55,: as against £ll9 this, year. Thewhole proceedings showed a loss of something like £6O or £7O for the last ; yea'r. ;:; ;■•■.,.. .

"/.ThePresident thought.that a good deal of the blame for the deficit rested ;upon. the., shoulders of the members of the.Socifity and Comfnittee'-: who.;.ljjiy'e : uot -worked: as hard as in past yeais'in the sale ot tickets. Again, 1 a good deal rested on the loss from thefalling'offof entries owing to the' unfortunate weather, andhejlid-not think that the;; Society ought tc- be disheartened owing .to this matter as they might reasonably, hope for better weather in the-future, and for his. part, looking Cat? the positions of cither Societies, hei was.nbt. at all discouraged but Was convinced' that if they only buckled Jo, the thing could and would prove a success.. 'ln Alluding to the proposal of the northern district to ■ hold a show, he felt convinced that it did not : arise from auy unfriendly feeling, 1 but he was-.sure sinco there was sq much diffioulty.-in supporting one show, it would lead to disastrous results to attempt to hold two shows. He would much like, to hear an expression from those present as to the present financial position of the Society. He called their attention also to the strictures in the papers as to the quality of the medals, All he could say was that the Committee had asked for a guarantee that the medals should bo 18 carat gold and steps had been, taken to see if the Sooiety had been cheated id "this matter, Tlw PresHedt had'been applied to by several. members of the Society offering to assist in wiping off the debt with which. they were struggling, in the form of- debentures being taken up and he would like to hear something from the Committee on this matter,

Mr E K, Birany was sure that if they could once rid.themselves of this incubus they would be in a position to laugh at any threats of opposition. it was shown that really tiie Society was not drifting away,: but the 1 fad was that the money had from time to time been expended in permanent improvements, so that there'was nothing left to meet debentures with.-

: It was suggested that if the debentures could be renewed, say at the rate of 5 per cent, it would do away with a permanent charge of £3O a year.

The President thought one of two things ought to be done that day, one to call a meeting of members of the Society, or to take some steps at the present meeting. He thought that as there was a good meeting of the motive power of the Society present, it would be a good thing to make a start then and there.

MrH. E. Bunny agreed with the President that the present would be the best time, but -confessed that he was at a loss as to what to propose, The President thought there ought to be public spirit enough in the district to get rid of such a sum as £BOO.

Iu order to put the thing straight before the meeting, Mr H, K, Bunny moved that a subscription list be opened for the purpose of wiping off the the permanent debt of the Society, At the same time he hoped that all would do their very best, and he felt convinced that if this were done the Society could be—if not one of thebest in the colony-at least a credit to the district in which they lived, whioh he thought should be an object all should be anxious to attain. He held a £lO dehenture and he had great pleasure in handing that to the 'do'oiety as a donation!';,. : : -<v • ■,-. .• ■ . The President,feltii"_strong conviction in bis pwn;mind;.tbat no less suuf than £6oo' would be raised in this district. . '•.■■•' .-',''-v^'" It was also moved' that in the event of any debenture holder giving a sub-' scription, the said', siibscriptioff'gp. •towards., the liquidation of'his own debenture.

?•„ It was also moved by .-MrH. EL Bunny tktanysubscriberof £\ towards this fuud shall be entitled to full member's privilege for the year, ••■-... Seconded by Mr H. McMasters, Carried.

Proposed by Mr W. C. Buchanan that a subscription list be at once opened in the room which could be dealt \yis while they were distributing the various prizes to those who had come to receive them;. = :

, Jlhe distribution was then proceeded with. . , ■

The Secretary informed the meeting that the n.edals had nob yet arrived but when they did he would forward them by post. Mr Burton Boys proposed that the society hold a show of dogs, poultry, pigeon, and flowers of all classes, ike, in tbe autumn.

Seconded by Mr H. Braitlnvaite,

After considerable disqussionon this matter Mr Boyssaicl he would ask. leave to withdraw the motion, Mr'H. R. Bunny was sorry to see that Mr Boys took the matter in this way, and hoped thai? Mr Boys would not withdraw hjs motion. It was .filially moved by Mr W. C. Buchanan and seconded by Mr Bunny that Messrs Braithwajte, Boys, H. McMasters, Dorset, Seed, Matthews, H. Beetham, Wood, Lowes, W. H. Beetham, and Armstrong be appointed to act as a Committee to report on Mr Boys' resolution at the -next general meeting of the Society in January 1885. It was resolved that the next Ewe and Ram Eair be held on Wednesday 28th February 1885.'

The subscription list amounted, be' fore the meeting closed, to £240.
