At the Ohristchureh Races the Hurdle Handicap was run as follows: —Borderman, 1; The Lad, 2; Faust, 3.

New Zealand Oup Handicap, a sweepstakes of 20 sovs each, with 1000 sovs added; second horse to receive 200 sovs, and the third horse 100 sovs from the stake, Two miles,—Hon W. Bobinson's Vanguard 1; Captain W. R. Russell's Leonora 2; Mr G. G. Stead's Ike 3. Necklace was scratched. Welcome Jack, Lady Emma, Turquoise, Johnny Faulkner, Sou'-Wester Nelson, Tim Whiffier, Minerva, Lady Evelyn, The Poet, and Leodegran also ran. Mr Campbell experienced considerable difficulty in getting his field into line, but after several attempts he sent them on their journey to a pretty start. Vanguard and Nelson were quickest on their legs, and were the first to show in front, attended closely by Tim Whiffier and Lady Evelyn On settling down, Tim Whiffier was taken to the front and led into the straight, with Turquois on his quarters, and Lady Evelyn leading the others. As they swept past the stand Tim Whiffier and Turquoise were on even terms, two lengths ahead of Lady Evelyn, after whom came Vanguard, The Poel, Welcome Jack, Ike, and Nelson, while Sou 1 -Wester and Leodegran brought up the rear. At Cutts' Tim Whiffier and Turquoiso wore still together, but nearing the mile post the latter passed Tim, who fpl| back into third place, behind Vanguard, At ford's Tho Poet came through and passed Tim Whiffier, but soon fell back again. On passing the half-mile post Leonora oame with a rush, taking second position at Turquoise's girths as the bend was rounded, Vanguard, lying a length away, third. When fairly in the straight, Derritt took Vanguard to the front, while Turquoise fell back beaten. Rudings also called on Ike, but Vanguard held his own to the finish, and won hard held by three lengths from Leonora, who was ten lengths in front of Ike, after whom came Nelson, Welcome Jack, Turquoise, Leodegran, The Poet, Lady Evelyn, July and Tim Whiffier whipping in the field.
