[From ouh own Cohrespondent.] In spite of somewhat broken weather shearing is progressing favorably in this neighborhood, and it is satisfactory to be able to state that the Hooks are coining in free from scab. At Messrs Johnson ifc Co.'s Mataikuna and Castle • point stations the wether flocks have been shorn, and at ica where thirteen Maoris are employed, the work will be completed in about four days, Several of the large stations wi'l not commence operations until some eight or ten days later. The lambing is reported as not very prolific this season,

Tho County election, which at one time promised- to be a lively contest, ended in.being a very tame affair. Two candidates succeeded in reaching the Road Board office just too late to send in their nomination forms. The return of Mr Hawkins should be acceptable to the ratepayers, for he is a gentleman of liberal views, and one who takes s lively interest in all public matters. A representative of Messrs Murray, Roberts- & Co, visited the Whareama river last week for tho purpose of making arraugementß relative to a steamer trading between that place aDd Wellington. It is reported that the. captain ofJ.be s.s, Manaia, who made a survey of the bar .at the mouth of the river was quite satisfied with the feasiability of it being suitable for a steamer of light draught.,.' I understand the programme is to'' make one trip this season, and then permanent arrangements for the future will be made.

I note that Mr Mackay convenes a meeting at the Tinui M on the 14th inst. at 3 p.m. ro the question of roads and settlement of Grown Lands. Mr Hawkins will attend and address the meeting. Ratepayers should attend en, masse, for, putting on one side tho importance ot the questions to be discussed, it is well worth while to ride several miles to hear Mr Hawkins speak, The opinion of tho ratepayers, will, I hear, bo asked at this meeting on the subject of Road Board maintenance of main roads versus County. The Reese-King dispute has caused a a good deal of comment here. The verdict generally is in favor of the course adopted by the Council. Notwithstanding statements made to the effect that all the sheep on the Crown Lands in this district havo been killed, reliable reports are to hand of considerable numbers still being in existence, Now that scab is all but stamped out on the freehold lands, the Government ought at once to take thoroughly efficient steps with regard to the Public Lands. Mr Liverfcon unquestionably has done good work, but it is impossible for one Individual to combat such an evil on thousands of acres of rough country. It is even stated that wild sheep have been seen on the_ utmost parts of the Puketoi mountains,

The Tinui school is progressing very favorably under Mr Turkington's charge, There are now 39 children on the books and an average attendance of 30 lor the last month.
