ANNUAL SHOW.
Officers of the Society,
President, W. 0. Buchanan; VicePresident, H. R, Bunny; Hon. TaEASUKEB, W. Booth j General Committee, A. Anderson, R. R, Armstrong, E E. Beetham, W. E. Bid will. H. Braithwaite, J. Dmmmond, D. Donald, B, Boys, N. Grace, B. Kim-bet-ley, J". Martin, jun., D. McDougall, A. Matthews, D, McMaster, H. McMaster, J. Reynolds, J, Stuckey P. P. Tancred, J. C Vallance, P, H. Wood; Auditors, F. W. R, Seed, L. Wilson; Secretary, H. H. Wolters. This event took place yesterday amidst a continuous downpour of rain, which had lasted from six o'clock on the preceding night. Yet, notwithstanding the weather nearly 1000 persons visited the show, 720 tickets being sold at the gates, The entries in every class showed a considerable falling off from previous years, and a very large number of the exhibits did not arrive The flooded state of the the Waingawa stopped a great deal to the north of Carterton, and many a family would have driven down in their traps between the showers had the river been bridged, By noon about three or four hundred persons were on the ground, taking shelter wherever. they could find it. Only one publicans booth was occupied Mr Bishop deciding not to spoil the Marquis of Normanby's chance by opening in opposition to him. At the one booth that was open not much was done, there being no shelter there from the storm, It would be advisable on another show day to build a booth that would be enclosed on one side, and then "weather or no weather" a trade would be done, Last year the proceedings were considerably enlivened by the jresence of the Carterton Brass Band and the ground presented a nleasing and animated appearance from the presence of the ladies in their bright apparel. But this year all was changed no ladies, no sunshine, no band, nothing but an unhappy looking lot of washed-out male bipeds, too wet to unbutton their coats to got the price of a livener to cheer them up. An attempt was made to supply tea and refreshments at Mr Whyte's booth, but the elements gained the mastery over the fire and the effort was only partly successful. The only really happy man among the whole crowd was that of Mr Burton Boys, Ho had a face beaming with satisfaction, The case was soon discovered, he had undertaken one part of the programme, and it had turned out a succesn. In a strong building arranged on a table were vianda of the most substantial kiad, beef, roast and boiled from Mr Bowles, bread from Wbytes, butter of the purest kind from the Goodius, preserved tinned meats and brawn from the Gear Refrigerating Company, and from the Wellington Preserved Meat Company, bowls of salad and a large dish of pickled beetroot, ticketed " Vogels Delight," Tables on each side were weighed clown with beer from England, whiskies from Ireland and Scotland, cognac from Eranee and light wines of Australian growth, Over this bounteous display the genius before mentioned was Hugh Chamberlain and ably did his duty. The first section in the catalogue was
HORSES, opening with the thoroughbred class. This year there were only live exhibits as against ten last year, and Mr P. Hume took first honors with Furiri, who won the Society's gold medal and Messrs Dawson & Go's special prize for the best thoroughbred, Mr T. Carswell's Daniel O'Cohnell taking second and Messrs Lyon k. Blair's prize. The Premier, who for the last six years has stood at the top of the list, was highly commended, and Mr J. G, Vallance's Yoltigeur was commended, A beautiful dappled horse, Crawford Priory, owned by Mr Walker, also called forth great praisfl. There was a decided falling off in the show of ponies, there being only two entries against eight of last year, Messrs Lowes and lorns 1 Tommy being highly commended. There was an increase in the entries of weight carrying hacks this year, Mr Clarke's, Comet taking first and Messrs Beethams' speoial prize, Mr Lang's Parihaka being a good second, and Mr Grant's Scotchman (bred by Mr Thos, Carswell) highly commended. In light weights there was again very keen competition, Mr H. W. Vallance taking first and Mr W. G. Buchanan's prize, Mr F. J. Clarke's Muriel second, Mr W. C. Buchanan's Playboy highly commended, and Mr James Macara's Treasurer commended. In the lady's back class, ridden by lady, Mrs J. lorns took first prize, Mr R, R. Armstrong's gold modal, and Mr N. Grace's bracelet, with Comus. It will be remembered Comus took the first prize last year. Mr H. R, Bunny repeated last year's performance by taking second prize with Cloud, two Maori horses being highly commended) Karanamu's Lady Maud and Kohea Tahanu's Hacana, There was a great falling off in the exhibits of buggy horses this year. Mr F. H. Wood took the first and Mr W. C. Buchanan's special prizes. Mr Buchanan's bay hack mare took tho first prize in section 45, and Mr Tancred's special prize. Mr John Eaton's Polly taking second and the speclgl prize given by Mr Armtsrong. Foi the best mare for breeding weight carrying hacks the silver medal and Mr W. C. Buchanan's three guinea prize were awarded to Mr C. H. Gayfer's br m Hawera, hy Traducer, with foal at foot'by the Premier. Mr S. Haigh took the first prize for the best hack for hill work. This included Mr R S, Hawkin's special prize of £3,
DRAUGHT HORSES compared favorably with last year's entries, Lord Nelson for ths second time obtaining the Society's gold medal and Mr Buchanan's prize of £5 ss, Mr D. McMaster's Dugdale coming in next, Mr Cargwell's Dainty Davie being highly commended. They all had their admirers however, Mr A. Thompson's three year old stallion Kufus by Prince Charlie was highly
commended, whilst Carswell's two year old Laird o' Largo took n first prize, there being no competition in either class. Mr J. Donald's chestnut mare, Maggie, beat Mr W, C, Buchanan's brown mare Maggie, which took the first prizs last year. They were awarded a first and second prize respectively. Mr Donald also took a first prize for his brown filly Blossom, and Messrs Levin & Oo.'s special prize, Mr E. Gordon coming second with Molly Darling. Mr James Donald's yearling filly, Heatherbell, was only considered worthy of a second prize, there being no other competitors. For gelding of any age in regular work Mr F. Graytook the first prize with Wallace by Sir William, beating Mr Buchanan's grey gelding Sam, which was awarded la second prize. Mr Buchanan also, as at last show took a second prize for the best pair of plough -horses in harness, there being nothing shown against them, In
CATTLE there was a considerable falling off in the entries, As usual in shorthorns Mr McMaster was the largest exhibitor and carried off the greatest number of prizes. He had no competition against him in sections 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Mr Buchanan, who was the only one who-showed against him in section 1, took the second prize for a bull of any age with his dark red bull Rufns, bred by Messrs Hay, of Canterbury, Mr McMa3ter's Bed Prince, taking first prize. In the second section of shorthorns Messrs E, J, Riddiford and Sons took first prize for bull calved since July 1881, with a splendid white bull, Baritone, by Charlie Barry, imported, Mr Farquhar Gray took second prize with a roan bull Taiwhanga, one of the well-known Bed Prince breed. Mr D. McMaster took first prize for a two year old bull, Chief Justice, and in shorthorn cows and heifers he was the only exhibitor, taking Messrs Murray Roberts and Co.'s special prize, Messrs Moore <fe Krull's special prize, and five of the Society'.! first prizes, three second prizes and three other highly commended. Mr D, McMaster also took first prize in grade shorthorns for his yearling roan hull Bed Riby There were four entries in section 14, Grade Shorthorn Cow with Calf, Mr D McMaster taking the first three prizes, and Mr F Gray's Strawberry, bred by Mr Wallace.Smith beiug commended. Mr F. -Gray was the only exhibitor in this class against Mr D. MoMaster, and he was bijhly commended for his three-year-old while heifer Grace, bred by Mr. W,Toms, Mr D, McMaster took first and second prizes and Mr C. Pharazyn's special prize for the best grade '-'Shorthorn cow, and of the Society's prizes for heifers, three first, three second, aud U.o highly commended. The only exhibits of Hereford cattle were from Ranoitumau, owned by Mr James Stuckey, and although not in high condition, were a show of themselves, combining great size with good constitution. The bull Chippendale has greatly improved since last year, when he took the gold medal prize. The calf Duke of Rangitumau from Amethyst (an imported cow from England;, and by Chippendale, shows much quality and great growth. Besides these there are five cows and heifers, amongst them being Lady Clare, the dam of the celebrated Lord William which was recently' purchased in England for America at 3800 guineas, which bull is tho sire of Chippendale. Amethyst although a very aged cow showed high quality, with a wealth of flesh, also Media, 11, a cow of large size but hardly showing the qualities of some of the others. This cow was recently purchased from tlie New Zealand Stud Company, and with her is a splendid bull calf only a few days old. We think this breed of cattle would be a very great acquisition for crossing purposes where hardiness and strength of constitution is required, particularly in hill country, There was no competition whatever in Herefords and Mr Stuckey will be under the painful necessity of retaining the special prize he offered of five guineas for tho best bull in this class. It is a matter of regret that there was no competition in this class, Stock owners in both North and South Wairarapa are known to possess this class fit for competition, As it was Mr Stuckey took one special prize, four first prizes, and one second, His cow Rosalina the Second, bred by the Auckland Agricultural Company, being also commended, In fat oattle Messrs, Bidwill still kept up the reputation of the excellence of their grazing ground by taking the first prize and the Barber Refrigerating Company's two special prizes, Mr D, McMaster took first and commended for bullock calved .since July 1880, and Messrs J. and W. Bidwill took-second and highly commended. Messrs Bidwill also took first and second prizes for two year old bullocks, and for fat heifers any age first and second, Mrs Tully's roan and white cow being highly commended. The show of
SHEEP, notwithstanding the unfavorable state of the weather for such a purpose, would be difficult to beat anywhere. The entries were not so numerous as last year and a great many that were entered did not turn up, but the quality was decidedly there. One hundred and forty-seven lots were entered as against two hundred and thirty-one last year. The show of Romney Marsh sheep was superior to anything exhibited at any previous year. Two of Mr A. Mathew's sheep were weighed at the railway station and one turned the scale at 3051b5, the other nt 3021b5. In Merinos in the wool Messrs W. and H, Beetham had no competition, but their exhibits deservedly obtained three prizes and Messrs Moore is Krull's special prize. In Cotswold ewes Mr John Reynolds took two first prizes, gold and silver medal and Messrs Bidwill's two special prizes of £3 3s, and £2 2s, also the silver medal for the greatest number of points. Last year the competition in Cotswolds was very keen between Messrs D. Donald, Tancred, and Vallance, but neither of them exhibited this year. In Lincolns Mr D, McMaster, as in former years headed the prize takers with five first, four second, and two special prizes, and four commended, Mr W.C. Buchanan
coming next with four first, .and four second prizes nnd one commended, Messrs W. and H. Beetham also took a second prize, and were highly commended for two of their exhibits, In Leicester sheep' Messrs, Lowes & lorns took the Society's gold and silver medals and a special prize of S.l 2s, also the silver modal for the grentest number of points, In Romney Mais, Section 37, Messrs J. and W. Bid will took first prize for the best two rams under eighteen months, Mi' A. Matthews king second and highly commended, In the Romney Marsh sheep Mr A, Matthews showed better quality than has ever before been exhibited. They took the lirst three prizes in sections 38,39,40,41, 42,43,44, and Gat and second in section 45 two eweHwith Romnev Marsh foot, Mr W. "Ballen's ex®t being highly commended, and Mr C. Pharazyu being commended. In Shropshire Down rams Mr James Gear took -first and second prizes and Messrs BeethWs special prize In In Southdowns Messrs W. and B, Beetham took first, second, and special prizes, In fat siieep Messrs Buchanan and A. Matthews. took all the prizes between them, the display being remarkably good, The judges and stewards stuck to their work well all through the.South Easter that brought down a continuous penetrating cold rain obliterating the writing on the tickets, and making things altogether lively. There were only three exhibits of PIGS and the stewards left .without the prize tickets, THE POULTRY SHOW was anything but a creditttk the Wairarapa There was ors» one exhibit in Aylesbury ducks by Mr W, G. King. They were really good breed but in bad showing form. In Dorking fowls there were four entries Mr T, J, James taking first prize and W, Nation's special prize, and Mr F. Gray the second, In Spanish there were two entries, Messrs Beetham first Mr A. McKenzie second. Mr King had a nice pen of Silver Spangled Haroburgs, for which he got a first prize, and Mr P. Gray the Becond, Mr W, G, King also took first and second in Dark Brahmas whilst Mr H. It Bunny took first and Becondjfc Light Brahmas. Mr J, G. Price! showed a splendid pen of Hoiidans and obtained first prize. Mr King also abtained a prize for an imported pen of Houdftua which were very good.
; DOGS, were a very weak feature of tuejhow, their being only 15 entries as 24 last year and 44 at the show in 1882 and not half the dogs entered turned up, The trial of the sheap dogs was yarding three sheep in a pen in the centre of a paddock, and from the tanieness of the sheep and the people crowding too near, the result was not so satisfactory as it might have been. IMPLEMENTS were represented by two MastertofT exhibitors only, Messrs E. McEwen and J. Boss. Messrs JReid and Grey were conspicious by their absence, Mr McEwoti bad two entries of .boublo furrow ploughs by D. and P. Duncan of Christchurch which were deservedly spoken of as superior to a great many plonghs exhibited at previous shows. He also took a first prize for a set of light harrows, and a set of four-horse tackle made by the same firm. Mr Jas, Ross also exhibited a conbination plough made by his well-known' foreman Mr \V. K. Watson, consisting of a horse hoe, scarifier moulder,.gyd potatoe digger, $P
VEHICLES were only represented by Mr J. Ross in carts and Mr D. Cameron in buggies, prizes being awarded in each case. PRODUCE the quality of the hams and bacon shown was fully equal to anything ever before exhibited. The publicans ot Carterton set a very good example to other districts in offering substantial prizes for the production of butter, cheese, and Won. The corned beef shown was in splendid condition and quality, A splendid assortmont of boots was exhibited by Mr D. P.' Loasby, for which he very deservedly obtained a first prize, although there was no competition. There was only one sample of Bcoured -wool,that 'shown by Mr De Lisle. Mrs K. McMaster showed a very good collection of bottled fruits and piokles. The competition in beehives was hen, Mr T. showing a bar frame hive of his oJ$ make, the selling price of which was. ticketed 255, and for which he ob< tainedthe first prize, Mr J.Barnard taking second. The Kaiapoi Woollen Company had a splendid show of, goods made up and in the piece, occupying tho whole of the room that was last year used. for the flower show. The . first prizo for the best shod light hack : was taken by.Mr J, ttoss, Mr MoEwen being a olose second, Mr Witlon, of lireyfcown, highly commended, The leaping match was the last event of the day, Mr Meredith taking the first prize- He had a very nasty spill after his second jump, the ground having become very slippery, but remounted apparently unhurt. There. were only four entries. The grounds were speedily cleared and extra long trains conveyed the greater part of the visitors back to Mastertqn, accorarqq. datioo having to be provided for the horses also, as the Waingawa could not be crossed, PRIZE LIST.
