MILNER STEPHEN AND THE MAORI KING.

Auckland, October 23,

Tawhiao and his chiefs proceeded to the Waikato to-day to attend a large native meeting at Whatiwhatihoe, Before leaving Auckland Tawhiao presented the representatives of the Kaipara tribes with gifts as a sign that peace now exists between the Waikato and Kaipara tribes. Tawhiao had an interview with Mr Milner Stephen yesterday, and states that the "magnetic healer" has cured him of rheumatics. He told Mr Stephen that if the cure remained permanent, he would send a letter down testifying to the fact. Tawhiao, who appeared, as did the other natives present, greatly impressed with the method of treatment adopted, said if tho Pakeha Tohunga has proposed to rectify the cast in his eye, or to change his hair from grey to a dark color, he would not have agreed, as people knew him by these signs, but this was good for the Tohunga, to take away the pains of his limbs. At a later hour Paora Tahaera, of Orakei, who also suffered from rheumatism, heard the glad tidings of the royal cure, and amidst much pantomimic gestures said he must go and see that Tohunga and get "passes" made over him. He leaves for Mercer this morning, but on his return will interview Mr Stephen.
