The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1884. THE REESE BUSINESS.

The public were informed yesterday by our local contemporary that the County scandal is not a case of Reese v King, but Reese v the County Council, or Reese v McGregor, We are to understand that after all Mr King has not been attacked by Mr Reese. We always thought Mr Reese was an honest straightforward man. We still believe him to be so but be has apparently got into bad company. He has told us a good deal, but will ho kindly inform us whether he is attacking Mr King or Mr McGregor or the County or whether he reserves to himself the righttoshufflehis pea about under three thimbles, Mr Reese in his communications with us always conveyed the impression lo our mind that his grievance was against Mr King. Apparently some persons encouraged Mr Reese to go for Mr King and now he has gone for him and they find that they have caught a Tartar, they are dropping Mr. King like the proverbial hot potato, and declare that Mr Mr Reese never hit Mr King, it was quite another boy he was., squaring at. Perhaps the public will believe, all this but we venture to assert that Mr King won't, A charge of "corrupt collusion," to uso the words of our local oontem-' porary, bos been made by Mr Reese. Will Mr Reese kindly say who he brings the charge against 1 As far as

we can see it is not very material, but if the thing is to be sifted we ought to know whether it is against Mr King or against Mr McGregor. We fancy it was against Mr King prior to the last meeting of the Council, possibly it may bo now against Mr McGregor, and next week it may be shifted to someone else. If Mi- Reese's friends had made a blunder it would bo far more honest and straightforward to admit their error than to try and shuffle out of it by miserable and pitiable subterfuges,

In conaequence of a break in the telegraph liuea to-day just this side of Greytown we have failed up to the hour at which wo go to press to receive our usual parliamentary summary and general wire news, We cannot quite understand why a simple fault of this kind should have blocked the department all day. Apparently slow and sure is the motto uf this branch of the public service. The following names are spoken of as probable candidates for the ensnmg County election, but in some instances it is known that there is no absolute cer« tainty of their coming forward ;—Messrs E, Meredith, E. We regret to have to report another death from drowning in the Ruamalmnga river.
