Dunedin, October 22,
A serious accident at JUavensbourne to day to a girl of 11 years, named,Meltia Mullihger. She was. engaged plucking flowers on ; the railway bank, and fell on the line just as the mid-day train from Palmerston was passing. Nothing could be done done to save her, and one of the carriages passed over her left leg,-com-pletely crushing it. She was conveyed in the same train to the Dunedin Hospital, where thelimb was amputated below the thigh, The train coming round a corner startled her so she fell, No blame is attributed to the engine driver.
Auckland, October 22, Mr Bracken closed his lecturing season at the Opera House to-night. He proceeds to the Waikato. Tawhio and his party have signed a. petition to the Government praying that the liquor traffic may be prohibited in the King country, They were present at a largely-attended temperance demonstration to-night in the Theatre Royal, Joseph Newan presiding. Tawhiao, Patara, Topia, and Hopi Ropiha, made speeches. A number of clergy, Europeans and maoris were present, Wellington, this day, The Government have received from Dr. O'Carroll, of New Plymouth, who has visited Parihaka, a report showing the pah there to be in a terrible state of filth. There are 65 cases of cellular erysipelas, and several deaths have occurred from the disease, Tohu and Te Whiti desired the doctor to thank the Native Minister for sending him to attend to them, The Native Minister has authorised a supply of medicine and medical oomforts for the patients.
