In the Legislative Council the Napier Harbor Board was reported with Amendments, and tho third reading made an order of day for Tuesday. _ The Otago Harbor Board Bill, Pensions Bill, Foreign Companies and Timber Floating Bill, were read a third time and passed.
In the House, In replying to questions the Government said half pay for the first three months and quarter pay for the next 3 was paid to persons injured in the Government service, The Mayor of Ashburton had bean asked to suggest a means of temporary relief for the destitution reported there. There was no intention ot altering the law so as to include the property belonging to religious denomination liable to taxation.
The Treasurer brought forward his motion to the effect that letter rates by Brindisi be increased to one shilling the half ounce, and other matter in proportion. The motion was carried without discussion. The motion to come into force immediately. An order in Council was issued and the Home authorities communicated with. The Parliamentary Honorarium Bill was read a third time and passed, as was also the Public Health Bill with slight amendmens.
_ The whole evening sitting was occupied in debating the second reading of the Westport Harbor Board Bill. The general tenor of debate was that while recognising the work as one of colonial interest the House had to consider the advisability of the Government undertaking this work or handing it over to a board. Several speakers were in favor of the whole question being relegated to a committee to report ou, An midnight the second reading was carried on the voices and Sir Julius Vogel moved that it now be referred to a committee, to report on Tuesday next, This was ulso carried. Sir Julius Vogel moved the second reading of the Greymouth Harbor j Board Bill, which was agreed to with- j out debate, and was also referred to] committee to report on Tuesday. ' The House adjourned at 12,32.
