(United Press Association,) Invercargiu, October 2, At 7 o'clock this morning a constable on duty in Dee-street found W, Smith's drapery establishment on hre, The Fire Brigade was soon on the ground, but nothing could be done to prevent the destruction of the buildings, which were of brick, The shop of James; Craig, watchmaker, on the south side was iu great danger, and so was Sloan's Theatre adjoining, Dunning's Opera Company removed their properties, and then rendered valuable assistance in pumping and saving property. As it was, the theatre is was somewhat damaged. Adjoining Smith's shop, on the north side was the boot warehouse of R, Sloan and Sons, and this soon caught, Between this and the next building (occupied by JReid and Ferguson, watchmakers) was an iror wall, and for a long time the brigade kept the flames from getting beyond this At 9 o'clock however when everybody thought all was safe, the water. was
exhausted, and the near end of .Ferguson's place took fire in several places, and spread from there to that of Koss (fruiterer), E. Clevo (seedsman), and and Cowper and Wilsone (ironmongers). All these places were, burned down, but before this a good deal of the stock was got out, The Prince of Wales Hotel, which is separated from Oowper and Wilson's by a right-of-way, was in great danger, and wasonlysaved owing to a brick wall erected between it and the burning shop, Had the hotel caught, the block might have been swept away to Spey-street, and great loss occasioned. Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire. Auckland, Friday. The brigantine Ada (0, Owen) from Rarotonga, brings news of a great fire at Tahiti early in September. Thirteen stores were destroyed, Henry Mitchell, of Hikurangi, Wanganui, who had twice before attempted to commit suicide, completed his purpose at Kamo yesterday by cutting his throat. A telegram from Waipukurau reports a serious shooting affray there. A man named Sylvester shot at Mr Chalmers, Railway Inspector, with a revolver, but missed him. Chalmers closed on his assailant, and several men going to'his assistance, Sylvester was secured and the revolver taken from him. He is now. in custody.: :
