The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1884. THE WAIPOUA.
There are two Waipoua difficultiey, the one which threatens the farms at Pirau, and the other which menaces the town of Masterton, It is noticeable that while the farmers interested are taking active and vigorous steps to avert the danger in the country, absolutely nothing is being done to protect the town. The contrast is not very favorable to the intelligence and public spirit of the Borough ratepayers and of their representatives in the Council. As we pointed out a few weeks ago, the work required to be clone to protect the town is not of such an extensive character as to justify the formation of a board of conservators and the imposition of a river rate, All that requires to be done can bo accomplished at a small cost by the Borough Council, This body has a working staff which can keep the stream clear of logs, plant willows, and here and there protect a weak point efficiently and economically, and we feel sure that if the councillors undertook such a duty they would have the support of the burgesses. The Borough Council is the proper local body to protect the the town. It has done some good work receuily by putting sanitary matters on a better footing, but we trust this particular effort has not exhausted all its energies.
