MASTERTON ROAD BOARD.
The first, meeting of the new Board was held at the offices, Perry street, on Saturday last. Present—Messrs Beetham, Dagg, Meredith junr., and Gunderson, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed,
Correspondence was read from the Musterton Borough Counoil asking Board ti. contribute towards the cost of erecting.a morgue. It decided to postpone consideration of this application. An offer was read from Mr A, Badger to supply a copy of statutes for local bodies and was declined,
Mr H. J, Bothamley applied for an extension of the Fernri dge road through his property, The Alfredton Eoad Board asked the Roard to confirm their aotion re acceptance of Mr Girdwood's tender for works on the Alfredton road, and applied for schedule of arrears of rates iu the Alfredton road district,
A letter waß read from the Upper Taueru Road Board asking for accounts to be adjusted. It was resolved to Bupply the sohedule asked for; ilso that legal steps be taken to recover rates due from the ratepayers in the Upper Taueru fioad Board district levied in June last, and that in the interim the adjustment of accounts with this Board be held over..
Letters were read from the Property Tax Department ro special rates.claimed in the Wainuioru. From Crown Lands Department re payments of sums due on deferred payment land to Alfredton Koad Board, FromC. Matthews re advance piyments on his contract, From Property Tax Depart* ment asking for list of lands on which rates are paid by owners and occupiers, (Resolved, That information be supplied.) From Borough Council asking for- services of board's engineer to report on Waipoua overflow,'
On the motion of Mr Dagg, necondedby Mr Meredith, the request of the Borough Council was granted, Letters were read, from the Commissioner of Crown Lands re application for payment of suma due on deferred land in the Mangaone Block. From the Auditor notifying the passing of the last year's accounts of the From the Public Works Office, approving of the application for an additional sum for the Alfredton District road line, From same re forms for raising loans under the Road# and Bridges Construction Act, From Alfredton Road District re colleotiom of rates in that distriot levied by the Masterton Road Board, With reference to the letter of the Alfredton Boad Board, it was resolved that the Board having already passed a resolution on this matter with respect to the Upper Taueru rates, will eithep collect the rates or appoint a deputy to do so and settle accounts at a conference.
Further letters were read, from R, Cockburn re damages to fencing on the Te Whiti to Gladstone road. From the Public Works Department, acknowledging the receipt of applications for loans on Wangaehu and Uriti roads, From Treasury advising payment of account of works on Masterton, Gladstone, and Opaki-Rangitumau roads. From Carterton Road Board asking for eervicea of engineor, From Beard & Gray, with legal opinion re collection of rates in new districts formerly a part of the Board district, From Public Works office granting applioa« tion for Opaki-Rancitumau road. From E, Connal re inßpeotion. of Wangaehu road survoy. _ From Mauriceville settlers ra state of Mauriceville road. From Mr Jackson re repairs on South Mauriceville road, and asking whether any amount of refund or deferred payment lands sold was available, With reference to the allocation of the County refund from the general rate it was resolved that the Board recognize the olaim of No. 5 Ward to a pro rata division of tho £327 given by the County the balance to bo divided between No. 2 and 3 Ward,
Mr Cox waited on the Board re a proposed diversion ol tho road through Mr McKenzie's land, and was requested to ascertain whether Mr MeKenzie objected to lus wishes, Messrs Moore, Donald, and Meredith waited on the Board re the Uriti road, The following resolution was passed— That upon Messrs 1 Moore and Donald guaranteeing to raise the sum of £93, that Messrs Moore and Meredith senr, will convey to the Board the Jand necessary to ensure a right of way for the main East Coast line to the Uxiti shipping place, conditionally that if the Goverment fail to grant the sum of £93 under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act the Board will levy a rate within the area benefitted to repay the said sum,
The'application for a division of the main line through Mr Meredith's property was then considered, and it was resolved—That the engineer examine the line at the cost of settlers interested, and the suggestion made for a deviation be not entertained,
The following tenders were opened for the Masterton-Glaastone contract :-P, Carr, £lB, 17s 6d (accepted), tfoliernan, £47 16s' 10d, J. Colway, £25, and P. O. Madsen, £36, declined.
A day's labor was voted to Mr Donovan for repairs on his road. Repairs to the extent of £2 were authorised oh the Upper Opaki road, Resolved that the cost of im. roving the line of road to Mr Duncan's property be estimated,
Messrs Toomath and Duncan applied to the Board to guarantee payment of a tiaber order for bridges at Alfredton, but the Board deolined to comply with the request, The engineer's report was then read. It was decided to lay the estimates and suggestion with reference to the Miki Miki bridge before the sestlers interested, and to ask them to make some proposal to this Board by its next sitting as tn the best method to be adopted, Itwas resolved to effect the necessary repairs for opening up the Mauriceville line ,of road on the understanding that in the event of separation the Mauriceville settlers guarantee to refund the cost by a special rate. -
A deputation then waited on the Board re the Waipoua overflow at Pirau. Messrs Dagg and Gunderson were appointed a Committee to meet the several committees in conference on this question. The engineer's reportwasthen adopted. It was resolved that a special meeting be held on Tuesday next to consider the financial position of the BoaVfi;
That with reference to the.applicatioa of Messrs Moore, Donald, Tatham and. Nitz to have the southern end of Wo',-,-s;;.Ward constituted a new Ward it was resolved that as the rates levied within tne boundaries of the Ward only amount to £129 the Board could not recommend the subdivision o£,:so small a Ward. " The Clerk was instructed to take theij necessary steps to seoure the returns of the" additional representatives for Nos. 2 and 3 Wards in accordance with petitions duly received, The usual routine accounts haying been paßEed for payment the Board.adjourned.
