EKETAHUNA.

[from odr own correspondent.] September 25, 1884, On Saturday, the 20th inst., a public meeting was held in the Eketahuna schoolroom. Between 30 and 40 settlers attended. Mr Von, Redin explained that he had called the meeting in consequence of a letter received from Mr Beetham, in which he (Mr Beetham) stated that he was afraid it was not the intention of the present Government to go on with the railway between Masterton and Woodville, and _■ were going to connect Woodville with Palmerston North instead. Mr Yon Redin then asked the settlers lo sign a petition prayin? Parliament to put money on the estimates for railway extension between Masterton and Woodville. Soma 30 settlers responded to the call and signed the petition. The Eketahuna school, after being without a teacher for nearly four months, is at last reopened. At a school committee meeting held yeßterterday Mr Shelton, a gentleman recently arrived from Queensland. was appointed master to the school, and has commenced his new duties today, (Sept. 25). . • The weather continuos bad and the roads are in a wretched state. The Alfredton-Eketahuna road has been closed for all traffic for four weeks, Two men have been put to work at it at last, so we may expeot to see the road reopened by the New Year. The County enaineer and overseer seem to have an aversion to travel on muddy roads, so they inspect this road sometimes in summer but never venture oa it in winter,
