Isitt lectured in Greytown only a few had the pleasure of hearing him, and, as our correspondent says, it was one of the most interesting lectures ever delivered m Greytown, It is to be hoped the rev. gentleman will see his way clear to repeat the lecture when we feel sure the result would be a crowded house,

The Salvation Army charged Greytown, writes our own correspondent, for the second time on Thursday night, The town hall was crowded, numbers not bein? able to find sitting room, The service was commenced by singing, which was not very grand at first, but as the audience began to warm up they did their share towards improving it, After singing Captain Francis prayed, then read a chapter from the book of Romans. After another song the Captain called upon some of the army who had been saved to testify, which they did in glowing terms, At the conclusion of the meeting there were two or three stepped forward, at the invitation of the Captain, to be relieved of their burden,

The Foatherston cricketers have at last made a start a meeting having been held at the Oddfellows hall last eveniuß when about 20 ioined a's members to the club. Mr C, MacShano was elected to the chair and the following committee were elected; —Mr G, Reynolds, chairman of town Board, President; Mr MacShano secretary; Mr Turner Treasurer; and Messrs W, Kemp, \V, Speckman, H. Fry, J. Rodder, and A. McDonald, It was decided to opeu the season on Saturday next the 27th hut. The chairman stated that he had not yet received a definite answer from the Town Board as to the ground required by the Club.

The first ot a series of concerts in aid of the Miuenm Fund was given at the Institute last night, Mr R. Brown, the Secretary of the Museum Commute occupied the chair, and notwithstanding the unfavorable 6tate of the weather there was a fair attendance, The entertainH ment was oponed by the String Band, under the able leadership of Mr Keisenberg with an operatio selection, after whioh Mr Wickerson sang " The Young Soldier," a descriptive song whioh was well received, Mr Webbe made his debut to a Masterton audience with a seriocomic fiong entitled " She hadn't a word to say," He has a pleasing tenor voice, and his Bioging favorably impressed the audience who demanded an enoore and were favored. with " The Midshipmite," Miss Bell followed with a selection from "llTroyatore," "Ah che la morte," which was vory nicely rendered, Mr Bish recited in the north country patois " The Lancashire Weaver" with power and feeling. Miss Gorbett gave a pianoforte solo " The Shepherd's song" with great skill and effect. Mr Coker, who waß cheered on coming forward, sang in his usual happy style of his experience, with "A charming young widow he met in the train," and in response to the redemaud gave a Bhort comio recitation. Mr Wiokerson was anain called on and sang with much pathos "Thou art bo near and yet so far." Mr Grundy followed with a reading " Mr Caudle is made a Mason," in which Mrs Caudle's vexation at being unable to obtain possession of Caudle's Masonic secret caused much amusement, Mr Bish sang " The Anchors Weighed," and in answer to an encore gave a capital rendition of " Farewell, Oh Dream of Life." Mr Tierny came next with a solo on the cornet, which was played with his usual ability, Mr Webbe, who was again called upon, gave the audience a laughable song "I Courted Mary Grundy," and " If This be Vanity Who'd be Wise." Mr Gant responded to his name amidst cheers, and gave an able selection from an opera, Miss Eoekel accompanying him on the piano, and they both deservedly-received a large share of approbation, and responded to an encore b? a piece equally approved. The Missob Bell and Brown followed with a duett in D.Diabelh, which was miioh appreciated, A serio comic song by Mr Eapp received an encore, The Ohuirmau then thanked the ladies and gentlemen who had so kindly Gome forward and assisted in the evening's programme, and intimated that another concert for the same object would be given next Friday, when be trusted to have the pleasure of their attendance, with as many more as could make it convenient to come. The String Band then gave two or three operatic selections and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close, The String Band consisted of Messrs Pearson, Gorbett, Tierney, and Papworth, Mr Keisenberg presiding with his well-known ability at the piano, whioh web kindly supplied by Mr Coker for the occasion.

We are glad to learn that a satisfactory sum ia likely to appear on the estimates for the maintenance of the Forty-Mile Bush road. . Mr G.'Beetham, M.H.R., arrived in Masterton yesterday. He was interviewed last evening by Mesara Perry and McKennti. . Money is now available for repairing the Waingawa and Waipoua bridges and approaches. At the meeting of the Masterton Eoad Board held tonday Mr W. H. Beetham was re-elected chairman. Tenders are invited by the Masterton Town Lands Trust for I' 2£ chains ot poat and rail fencing, A spacious shop in the Theatre Royal building is advertised to be let at a low rental by Mr G. S. W. Dalrymple, estate agent, Mr Lawrence announces that the wellknown Clydesdale " Lord Nelson" will travel tho district this season. Mr Ford writes aa follows:-" The weather has been dull and damp nearly the whole of the week, and at times the wind strong. Rain fell on five days, but not heavily. Total rainfall for the week is only '195 parts of an inch, The barometer is steady butjgradually falling, a sign of mora rain to follow. Mean reading for the week is 29.53 inches, and for the thermometer it is 52 fah. If we have not any more severe frosts this spring fruit will be very abundant in this locality. The wind Btrong from the west and slight from the north.
