MASTERTON RIFLES.

The Masterton Rifle Volunteers met last night in tho Theatre Royal for Government inspection, under command of Captain Donald and Lieuts. Wilton and Cameron, Thirty-six men were present out of forty-two—the present strength of the Corps, The Company having been proved by Sergeant-Major Bezar, Major Butts inspected arms 4c., and expressed his satisfaction with the state of the Corps, The Company was then put through a number of different drills by Sergeant-Major Bezar under Major Butts' inspection. At Captain Donald's request Major Butts presented Vol. George Bentley with a very handsome silver cup, being the Captain's prize cup won by him (Vol. Bentley) three times, after a long and keen contest. Major Butts then produced and explained Captain Morris' tube for indoor rifle practice, Some two-inch boards were then put up, and a paper target placed on them, Twelve men were told off, each having a shot at ten yards, and made very good practise. Sergfc. Wood made a bull's eye right in the centre of the ring.. Great satisfaction was expressed at the perfect success of this most ingenious contrivance.

The Company was then dismissed. A meeting was then held in the Empire Hotel, Captain Donald in the chair.

Cliallengos were read for matches to be fired in Masterton on the 4th and 11th of October from tho D. Battery and City Rifles, Wellington, and referred to the Match Committee.

A letter was received from the Makara Rifles, offering to sell forty uniforms, the corps having disbanded.

It was resolyed—That they be asked if they would sell ten or a less number as the whole forty would not bo required, It was resolved to take steps to try and obtain the services of a paid bandmaster to reform the band, ' A letter was read from the Government, asking for suggestions as to the requirements of the Volunteers, and it was resolved to suggest that the Government should supply uniforms free of cost, and a small subsidy to the funds ot the corps, The annual class-firing of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers commenced this morning at Manaia, under the instruo-
