Martin, Dr Martin, Mr Martin, and the Misses Martiu (2), will be passengers for Wellington by the Doric, The adjourned meeting of the directors of the Greytown Butler and Cheese Factory takos place at Mr F, H. Wood's office on Saturday evening next. The programme of the concert to« morrow evening to be given in the upper room of the Institute for the benefit of the Museum fund, includes aonga by Miaa Bell, and Messrs Wickerson, Coleman, Bapp, and Coker, instrumental mu?io by Misses Bel), Brown, and Corbett, and Messrs Biah and Tierney, and readings by Messrs Grundy and Beard. The Borough Council oi Masterton now regulates the conditions for sweeping chimnies, licenses sweeps, and collects fees and fines, but some how unfortunate ratepayers are none the better off for all this bother, On Wednesday Inst the 24th inßt., we employed the Borough officer to sweep a chimney for us, This morning we observed a considerable quantity of soot—a dan»arous quantity, in fact—falling down this particular chimney, and yet it was duly swept a week ago by a borough officer, and in accordance with municipal by-laws, Apparently the Council is mure anxious to collect fees and fines than it is to arrange for chimneys being properly swept. The D Battery vVelliugton Artillery has challenged the Masterton Rifles to fire a friendly match at Masterton on Saturday, the 4th proximo, There is no doubt but that the challenge will be accepted.
Two.badgers arrived atTenui to-day on their way to lea station, and a consignment of mongoose are expected shortly, The fox will be the next pest introduced into the Whareauia district under the pretence of being a natural enemy of the rabbit, It is a well known faot that badgers vie with foxes iu killing lambs. The Greytown Rifle Volunteers met for inspection oil Tuesday night. There were present, Captaiu Webster, Lieut. Cameron and Varnham, and about 30 in the ranks. Major Butts and Sergeant Major Bezar wer also present. The former had one of Morns' lining tubes with him, and after explaining the manner of using it several of those present tried it and made excellent shooting, Although simple, it is a very handy contrivance, and we understand a number of the men are going in for them. After drill Captain Webster addressed a few words to the men re the proposed alterations to the Regulations, and also about a case which well deserves consideration. He stated that the widow of one of the "Noble Six Hundred" residing in the other Island was in rather Indifferentcmmmßtances aud that the various corps in New Zealand had decided to open subscriptions lists in her behalf. He hoped the members of this company would do their best for her. Through overloading, the train to-day arrived at Masterton three quarters of an hour behind time. The fourth quarter of the Wellington College will begin on Thursday, the 2nd of October next.
Summer hours commence in the Masterton Public School on Monday next—i.e., the school opens at 9 a.m., and an extra halt hour is allowed in the middle of the day, The Masterton Fire Brigade met last night for dry practice. At the meeting held after practioe it was resolved to send a challenge to the Wellington Brigade to compete in Masterton on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, Mr J, Muir was nominated to the office of Fire Inspector, Messrs Keester and Muir were appointed to put the fire bell in working order.
Mr W. H. Westin, of Renall-street, Masterton, has been appointed sub-agent for. this district ior t&e Northern Fire Insurance Company. Mr Westin has also commenced business as a commission agent, and will shortly open new stores in Chapel-street for the sale of coal, coke, tar, &c. He will make the supply of household coals a speciality, and from his special experience of the trade he will no doubt be able to do a good business in this town,
The quarterly inspection of the Carterton Rifle Volunteers took place in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, when twenty-two members paraded under the coinmaud of Captain Bennett After the company had been put through the usual exercises by Sergeant Bazar, the rifles', side arms, &c„ were inspected by Major Butts, after whioh he introduced to the notice of those present one of Captain Morris' patent sighiiug tubes, designed especially to assist riflemen to practice at a target placed at not more than thirty feet distant, at which, after mastering a few simple instructions, they would be able to fire as at an ordinary target up to a distance of nino hundred yards. Several volunteers left the ranks and fired shots from a carbine in which the tube was placed. Pour made some very good shots. After the Company was dismissed a ballot was taken for the appointment of a sublieutenant. There were three oondidates for the ccmmission—Sergeant Moore, and Corporals Reid and Hooper, The result of the ballot was that Corporal Hooper was elected.
A word to the wise is sufficient. Don't think of purchasing men's, youths, or boy's Spring or Summer clothing until you have inspected the large stock now opening at Rapp and Hare's Emporium—(Advt.)
