The following telegram was sent by the Colonial Secretary to the Governments of Victoria and New South Wales:—" You will personally oblige me by causing one of your officers to immediately furnish me with the following information:—lst. Number of patients still suffering from smallpox in the colony. 2nd. The number of deaths and recoveries from disease since the present outbreak. 3rd. As to the probability of confining and com pletely stamping out the disease, and the time within which such result could be expected." The following replies were received,—" Victoria—Tho number of patients suffering from smallpox is eleven, namely, six in Sanatorium and live at Riugwood, and it is anticipated that after 19th inst, that there will be five cases remaining under treatment at Sanatorium. The number of deaths are two. It is thought the disease will not spread any further. There have been 26 cases treated in Sanatorium since the outbreak on Ist June last. Besides there have been 18 cases reported in various localities in Victoria, of which five now remain under surveillance, tho others having recovered, Detailed returns by post, No new cases since 13lh inst. James Service, Premier." From New South Wales:—"Twclvo cases of variola now in the colony, all confined in vigorous quarantine. Several are convalescent; only two in a dangerous state. Measures have already been adopted for prompt isolation whioh are cousidored very ellectivo and likely to stamp out the disease Bhould no fresh centres bo created by importation from Victoria. Alex. A two-storey wooden tenement house occupied by Frith, photograper, and Obee aud Fischer, cabinet-makers, and owned by John Tole, was burnt last evening.
