The new Masterton fire-bell waß rung yesterday evening Blowly and solemnly for the first time, As Mesßrs Mills & Cable the makers of it staled it is a fine toned bell. It has quite an ecclesiastical ring, and aB a " church going bell" is superior to the bell of St. Patriok and St. Matthews, We fancy' however that the noisy little bell which it replaces would wake up more Bleepers and put more terror into the heartß of the people than its aristocratic successor, At present, however, the new bell does not appear to swing very freely, Possibly it may be re-adjusted in the tower in such a way aB to give forth a fuller and freer power. Mr Thomas Carswell announces tha his _ well-known thoroughbred horse Daniel O'Rourke, and his Clydesdales " Dainty Davy" and the" Laird O'Largo will be available for stud pnrpoßes this season.

I am very sorry that I find myself unable to be present. I am doing all I can to prooure assistance from the Government to repair damage done by floods. Mr Buchanan, myself, and Mr Smith, ,had another interview to-day with Sit Juliuß Vogel and Mr Richardson re the subject of the necessary monetary requirements of the district. We got uo positive as« Burance of aid, but I believe we shall find that the financial statement that will be delivered te-morrow by the Treasurer will indicate that oar wants have not been forgotten. At the same time, unless the assistance is afforded us from the proceeds of a loan, we shall have to go without .anything, The only money available for main roads under ".The Roads and Bridges Construction Act" is not more than £IOO. There has been, lately, no land fund from whioh the main road account can be replenished. The Department have promised me that an engineor will be sent immediately to report upon the Waipoua overflow, and that no doubt the Department will also recognise their reaponsibility-re the railway line endangered by the overflow. I hope to attend the meeting of the County Council next week, and shall be glad if the meeting to consider the extension of the railway construction through the Forty-Mile Bush Distriot could be held onsthe evening of the;day of the Council meeting, lam doing all I can, Yours truly,—Geoege BEETHiM.
