South of England resulted to-day in a victory for the visitors by five runs, with an innings to spare. The first innings of the Australians closed for 163. The Homo team required to make 108 to avert a one-inning's defeat, but in their second innings were only able to score 102, and the visitors won as already stated, The attendance on the ground to-day was good and the weather line, September, 13, The team of professional cricketers about to visit Australia will leave England by the steamship Orient on the 19th inst, The following are the names of the team;— Shaw, Shrewsbury, Barnes, Flowers, Scotlon, Attewell, Briggs.Eead, Qlyett, Bates, Peel, Hunter, and Lillywhite. London, September 13. Both Houses of Parliament will meet on October 23 for the autumn session. Brussels, September 13. The bitter feeling existing between the Clerical and Liberal parties is now most intense, and the reserves have been called out to maintain order. Arrived—Steamship Shannon, this morning, with the inward Brindisi mails,'dated London, August 8. London, September 13. Conools remain at 101|, and New Zealaud securities at last quotations. The market for colonial breadbtuflfs and tallow are unchanged. At to-day's wool sale 8300 bales were offered. The market continues firm.
The estimate yield of the Continental beetroot crop for the present season is 2,550,000 tons. The cargo of frozen mutton, comprising 12,000 carcases, ex steamship Ruapehu, has been landed in excellent condition.
Melbourne, Monday. Received September 15th, 12,30 p.m.—The Legislative Council of Fiji has agreed to that colony joining in a guarantee of £15,000 required by the Imperial Government in connection with the appointment of a high Commissioner for New Guinea.
Mr Service has written to the Premiers of the various colonies enquiring whether consideration has been given to the Bill introduced by Mr Griffith in the Queensland Parliament providing for the exclusion of French criminals from that colony. Mr Service strongly urges the necessity of such a measure, and favours the imposition of differential tonnage dues on vessels trading with convict settlements, Sydney, Monday.
Arrived last evening—flotomahana. Several smallpox patients will be released from quarantine to-day, no fresh cases having occurred at the station.
