Captain Francis of the Salvation Army yisited Carterton with a contingent of officers and soldiers on Sunday afternoon, and had a "hallelujah" meeting in the Publio Hall, which was well packed with a vory appreciative audience. The ohoral part of the service was led by "Cornet" Spooner, and addresses were given by Serceaats Lee, Bedding, Spooner, Lawrence, and other Masterton and Carterton Salvationists, Two came out to the penitent form. Henry Ellis waß charged on remand at jhe Masterton Police Court this morning, before Mr Wardell, R,M„ with being drunk, whilst in charge of a horse on Friday, September 12th, in tho public street, to whicn he pleaded guilty, and was fined 40s or 14 days, A second charge was also made and proved by the police of obscene language oii the same occasion. Prisoner was fined £5 or one month's hard labor, the sentences to be accumulative. The prisoner said he had or £7O in the hands of the manager of Anniedale station, and His Worship gave him the chance of finding substantial bail for his appearanoe on Monday next, Prisoner said he knew no one in Masterton, and His Worship told him he would then have to take the consequences of his conduct, A further charge of damaging property in thelrjiico of Wales' Hotel on the same day to the extent of 6s waß proved. The prisoner rode into the bar on horseback, and, in getting off his horse, fell on the counter and smashed seven tumblers. There being no apparent malice, prisoner waß obliged to pay the value claimed, namely, 6s. A long Ijst of fines and imprisonments for offences of a similar nature wero recorded against the prisoner,

We direot attention to an advertisement in another column notifying the publio that the new .fire bell—which was successfully hoisted into its position in the tower this morning by the members of the Maaterton Fire Brigade under Captain Keester, will be rung at half past five o'clock this afternoon.

There was rather a poor house at the Theatre Eoyal on Saturday evening owing ts the inclement atate of the weather, but .notwithstanding the Birtall attendance Millis carried out his programme to the entire satisfaction of the audience, being more Buccesßtul, if that were possible, than on the previous night. During the evening he was several times encored and was loudly applauded ever; few minutes. His imitation of a dog howling under the stage was immense and at once a spaniel, which happened to be in the theatre, started off barking at n great rate. The local hits, too ,were very happy.
