The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1884. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

The well contested municipal election which was decided yesterday" at Masterton in favor of Messrs Muir, Bacon, and Gapper, may be regarded as a very satisfactory contest. The election was conducted in the best possible spirit by the various candidates, and, even the unsuccessful pnss will acquiesce in the clearly-expressed, choice of the burgesses and will feel some satisfaction in knowing that they have, by working up the contest, elicited a full and tree choice of municipal repiesentatives, The three Councillors elected go into office with a strong vote of confidence from the ratepayers, and, with such a solid majority of the burgesses at their back, they will be able to give valuable assistance to.the Council in determining the many important questions which are now ripe for a decision. The gas question, the public health question, the flood question, and the question of reducing the size of the 'Borough are subjects which must occupy the attention of the Council till they are brought to an issue, and, we expect great assistance from Messrs Muir, Bacon, and Gapper ■in resolving them. We ate not surprised that, Mr Gapper should have' recorded fewer votes than either Mr Mum or Mr Bacon, His position on the.poll is a satisfactory one. An outspoken mau,'who serves the public as a Councillor for a series of years, gifchers enemies as well as friends, whereas a new candidate is free from the element of hostility, For this reason, we are disposed to regard Mr Gapper's position on the poll as a proud one. It is alike creditable to the veteran Councillor who has served the Council for so many years, and to the burgesses who have desplayed their appreciation of these services. Messrs' Muir and Bacon are, of course, the popular heroes of the contest, We welcome them to the Council, and hope, when we have watched their work as municipal representatives, to be able to say emphatically that the choice of the burgesses in September 1884 was a wise one.
