MURDER OF A LABOR-TRAD-ING CAPTAIN.
; From a recent number of the Fiji Times we learn that the labor schooner John Hunt returned to Suva with her flag at half-mast. 1 for the death of her captain, Daniel Leahy, who died in consequence of a wound received at Malicola. Only meagre particulatsare (io hand, but from these it appears that, after engaging twenty-seven recruits, the vessel arrived. off Malicola, and signals; were made from the beach to send in the boats. Tlio captain went in, but on his approach the Natives withdrew into the bush. The captain hesitated to land, and a Native then came down with a club and a spear, which he offered for sale! The captain bought- the club, and was turning to get a knife as payment for the spear when the. Native hurled it and struck him.: A flight of spears followed, onj of which hit a Native in the boat. The crew backed out, : and'aftor the wounded men were g ot on , 'headed for Havanah Harbor, but the captain died in great agony seven days after receiving'the wound.
