MASTERTON FARMERS' CLUB.
The first general meeting qf the Masterton Farmers' Club was Ijeld in the building at the back of the borough offices on Saturday last, and was well attended, Mr Heseey havjng been voted to the chair, the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The report of the Ooinmitlep pn rules and regulations was then discussed and adopted, Mr Herqn expressed an opinion that it was undesirable for the Club to take part in any political discussion. The rule permitting suoh discussiqn was, however, affirmed. Thp election of oflcers was t|]en proceeded with.
Mr McOardle proposed Mr Hessey as President, Mr Hegaey, he said, had taken a very active part in establishing
the Club. He was also a practical farmer and possessed the confidence of members. Mr Reßßey declined to accept the honor, He had, when he assisted to organise the Club, stated that though he would do all he cnnld to form it, he would not take a prominent position in it when it was once established.
Mr Heron waß then proposed, but declined on the ground that he was. not a practical farmer, and. proposed Mr T, E. Chamberlain in his stead. ' "Mr Chamberlain declined, as hg was prepared to propose, a better man, Mr R, D. Daa* A voice: He is not here I
Mr Duick hoped that Mr Chamberlain would consent to act,
The Chairman expressed his conviotion that Mr Dagg would act if elected. After some further discussion a ballot was taken, which resulted in the election of Mr Dagg to the office of President (applause,)
Mr McOardle proposed Mr Hessey ai Vice President.
The Chairman deolined and proposed Mr T. E, Chamberlain for the office.
Mr Chamberlain objecfed, aijd thought that fhe' Chairman ought to take fhe pdat, but a ballot was taken which conferred the appointment on him.
Mr R. Brown was elected secretary and treasurer, on the motion of the chairman and accepted the appointment cofldjtjonally on, .his bemg allowed to resign it when the Club was Jn working ordpr, as his other engagements would Hot permit him to retain it permanently. A oommittee of seven members was then seleoted by ballot from fourteen candidates. The names of the members elected were Messrs Buick, J. Hessev, G, Chamberlain, J, Heron, Jas. Macaw, E. Welch, and A. W. Cave, Mr Rumrner called' attention to ;tbe sparrow pisance, and suggested that'the present tieason was ft convenient.one for settlers to lay poison, Mr MoCardle questioned whetlier spar* rows did not do more good by destroying grubs and oaterpillera than they did harm by injuring crops. Since sparrows were introduced into the Wairarapa he understood farmers.had obtained a better yield of grain, . The Chairman thought that the increase of yield, was due, to betl'er'farmirii?, Ife would not l|ke to see sparrows exterminated, b'ut it was advisable to keep them in checjc. '.'Mrlprn'mer agreed with % opinion, expressed by the chairman, The chairman inquired jf anyone had used poison successfully against the sparrow, Mr Kummer replied that both 'the Messrs Chamberlains and himself had, killed large numbers of them with strychnine, Notices of motion were given by Mr T, Ej, OJ|amberlajn in favon of obtaining a Parlianjentary'snbsidy \o Farmers' Clubs, ay Mr D. Guild for disonssing practical aarvealing, and by Mr Kummer on the marrow auestion. The meeting then adjourned,
