THE NOVEL RACE.

The match between Quigley's g m " Fly-by-Night" and Bernard's c m " Streaked Lightning" came off on the Opaki course at 4 p.m. on Saturday last, distance 2\ miles. Some sixty or seventy spectators witnessed the interesting event. A delay of some time occurred through the non-arrival of Mr Quigley, His steed, however, was on the ground, in charge of a 'trainer, and in the absence of its owner Mr E. Dixon volunteered to pilot the gallant grey. Mr Bernard was mounted on his famous chesnut, which appeared more prominent in bone than in flesh, but in this respect she had no great pull over the grey, which was an anatomical study, After a preliminary spurt up the straight, in which speed was sacrificed to safety, the riders faced the starter. The flag fell to a good start, both horses springing away at a pace that could not have been less than six miles an hour, During the first round both horses were pretty even, though Fly-by-Night occasionally led, but in passing: the stand fly-by-Night showed symptons of distress, and in the second mile allowed " Greased Lightning" to forge ahead. Mr Bernard maintained his lead till the winning post was reached, the gallant grey being a few minutes behind. Time 11 minutes 59fsecs. When Mr. E. Dixon dismounted he protested .agoinst Fly-by-Night on the ground that she had run inside a post. The stewards reserved their decision, which is expected to be given this evening.
