Sydney, Monday. Received August 25 th, 11 a.m Five cases of smallpox have been reported to the health authorities, who havo ordered the patients to be removed to the quarantine station, London, August 23.
A telegram has been received from Foochow anaoucing that the French fleet opened a bombardment upon the Chinese arsenal near that town at 2 p.m. to-day (Saturday), London, August 24,
The latest telegrams to hand regarding the course of events in the connection with the Franco-Chinese war gave the following intelligence, Li Fong Pao, the Chinese Minister, left Paris last night. Three Russian ironclads have been dispatched to reinforce the Russian fleet now cruising off the Chinese coast, The Governors of Kirangsi and Yunan have been ordered to proceed to Tonquin. A telegram despatched from Foochow at 10 p.m, states that Admiral Courbet bombarded the Chinese arsenal near that town for three hours, and entirely destroyed it, together with seven Chinese gunboats, which was sunk by the fire of the French ships. Two other gunboats escaped, The European residents at Foochow have not been molested, although great excitement prevails among the native population,
