We are afraid the prices of admission are too high for a crowded house, although the conoert will be one out of the common.

On Saturday last Mr J. R. George, a gentleman well known in gas engineering enterprise, arrived in Masterton by the mid-day train and returned lo Wellington at 2 p.m. During his brief Btay he met several residents at the Borough Council office and submitted a proposal for a local gas company. The main feature of. (he project was a promise that any'sharps which might not be subscribed locally would be taken up in Wellington. A general discussion took place on the proposal, some favorjng the overture while others expressed an opinion that it would not be expedient to entertain it until a meeting of all probable consumers had been convened. It is satisfactory, however, to know that Masterton has now virtually two proposals for supplying gas to select from and con* sequenily there is a fair prospect of thf town being lit at an early date.

We. have to record a very narrow escape from, what might have been a very serious conflagration, On Saturday evening between 9 and 10 o'olock, Mrs Wagg, of the Prince of Wales, was warned by the smell of burnin?, and immediately Bet about to djsoovertlje cause. She found one of the upstairs bedrooms to be in flames, By her presenqe of rnind and. prompt measures she managed lo stibdqe the Cames, not before, however, some considerable damage was done to furniture, bedding, &o. The only explanation that can be suggested is that one of the lodgers had occasion to go up 'to the bedroom, leaung the candle behind, in a position too near some of the hangings. It is a matte? fgr congratulation that the fire was discovered in ijme, Had a greater hold been obtained it would have been difficult to say where it would have ended, as this building adjoins one of the largest blocks of wooden buildings in Queen-street.
