Part of the Old Cockpit, situate in St. John's-place, Stoney-gate, Preston, Ml in with a tremendous crash a few months ago. It is said that this old. building was erected at the end of til last or beginning of the presr century, at the expense of the'father of the present Earl of L ot „y, who was passionately fond of cockfights', and fought many a main therein. On Sundays it was used as a school in connection with the parish church, and it was the duty of the apparitor to clear away the blood' and feathers left from the week's combats before the opening 1830 the place was dosed as a cockpit.
