FINANCING V. PATRIOTISM.

Referring to a statement " that the Jews had turned round and do not disdain to make a profit out of the loans of the country which baited their brethren," "An English Jew" writes as follows to the Pall Mall Gazette

" There is no doubt, I believe, that a powerful and wealthy Jewish firm in Berlin has agreed to undertake an important part in the new Russian loan, and possibly it may be assisted in the operation by other German-Jewish firms; but it would be in the highest degree misleading to conclude from this action on the part of a few German firms, which 1 will not attempt to characterise, the " the Jews"—meaning by this phrase the community at large—either " have turned round" or ''that they have foigotten, or are likely soon to forget, the persecutions of which their brethren have been, and to some extent I feel still are, the victims in Russia, Indeed I am quito convinced that the Jewish community at large, and certainly my brethren in this country, would in the strongest degree repudiate the idea that they are in this or in any other matter represented bv the firms in question iu Berlin, who it is well-known do not suffer their financial operations to be influenced by the interests either of their own community or even of their country. It will be recollected thai in 1870 a leading member of a well-known Jewish firm in Berlin was sentenced to a heavy penalty for having taken a part in tho loan then about to be issued in France for the purpose of the war undertaken against his own country. It will not have escaped notice that no house in London has been prevailed on to take any part in the new Russian loan.
