YESTERDAY'S NOMINATION.

To the Editor. Sir,—Kindly allow me space for reply to one or two of Mr Bunny's remarks yesterday on the hustings at Eeathcrston, He denied that I advocated the purchasing clauses in the Land Act in 1882, In the debate which took place in the House I was the first to suggest these clauses, and though the Government then refused to accept them, they wero afterwards forced to do so by the TJppev House. Your readers can scb this in Hansard for themselves.

On the question of taxation, his remarks were equally misleading as to myself. I have always advocated direct taxation of property, in relief of Customs, because property has been largely benefitted by tl>e loan expenditure, which has rendered heavy taxation necessarv.

Mr Bunny was also very eloquent in his romarks as to bribery &c, beoauso I dealt with my honorarium in accordance with my vote in the House, and denied the correctness of my statement as to having sent a chequeto the Feathei ston Library Cammittee about two years ago, Mr Bunny cannot, however, alter the fact that I did send the cheque and I am sure the Committee will be the first to acknowledge the correctness of my statement. It is true that the cheque was retnrned under circumstances the exact nature of which have now slipped my memory, but which the Committee will kindly supply. I have to apologise for intruding these personalities into your columns, but tbe course taken by Mr Bunny during the present election has left no other course open to me. I am, Ac.,

W, C. BucniNiN,
