WAIRARAPA WEST COUNCIL.
The West County Council sat'at the Council Chambers, Carterton, on Saturday. Present -Crs Wvi. Booth (Chairman), Philijk, Bunny, sen., Bnnny. jun., Braithwsß Eussell, Matthews, and Buchanan.' ' The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. v.C: The Treasurer's report was ;read, shewing a credit balance at the bank of £229 8s 3d. Correspondence from Engineer's Office was read, members expressing their opinion that it was unnecessary to go into particulars. • Cr H, Bunny asked whether a poll had A been taken re spending tho sum of £SOOO W from the Public Works Department. • Cr Phillips asked authority to be produced authorising'the poll. : Tho minute was read, but Or Phillips contended that it was no resolution, and 'went oa to say that the way in which the Counoil was carrying on was most harmful. Ihe mode in whioh the rate was struck was quite illegal Crjßraithwaito inbrincd Cr Phillips that he had omitted to attend all the meetings of the Council, Cr Phillips contended that he had done so; ■ Crßussell said that Cr Phillips had been absent three or four meetings in succes-

Bunny this was granted conditionally that it did not interfere with old lessee A letter was read from A. Doughy Man, ao that if this was not done settlers there would have to pack all wool and stores. A letter was read from Mr McClond, A letter from the lessee of the Perry Toll, asking for consideration at the hands ot the Counoil, was read. He found that ho was the Spit when th, Lake was closed, thereby suffering consideiabie pecuniary loss. Or Matthews moved, and Cr H, R. He would not import the ferret question into the ft discussion, but he thought dogs the best wav \ of coping with the ra'.bit pwt, as they would * work when poison was useless. It had been said that: greyhounds were no use as rabbit dogs He considered that a few of them in a rabbit pack were very useful. He Lad proved it by past exoerience. Cr Eussell thought that if Greyhounds were taxed 10s, if a man had a good one he would pay for it; but the danger arose from he large number of greyhounds that were being teed by the Natives, and he thought if this -tax were levied they would prefer destroying them to paying the tax tir Bonny thought there was a good deal o be said on both sides, and he would move that a copy of the report be sent to each member of the Council, and the enquiry postponed until a future meeting. Cr Phillips seconded the motion, which was earned, The Council then went into Committee.
